A New Season

September 13, 2011 By Chris Sneddon

I’m a true California girl. I live for summer, so when the days grow cooler and the days become shorter, it has always been a difficult transition for me.  I would pout my way through autumn, because really, finding a true fall season in Southern California is pretty much impossible. A couple of years ago I decided it was time to stop pouting about it and find fall on my own and I have.  Pumpkin patches? Check.  Apple picking? (yes, even here in SoCal!), check.  A yummy pumpkin latte? Well, that’s a given.  But what truly signifies the changing seasons for me?  Football!  High school, college, professional, it doesn’t matter.  Fall is in the air, people.  Even for me, this born and bred California girl.  🙂

Share your stories of how you celebrate the changing season. Show us your autumn.

We are giving away one $100  Paper Coterie gift card EVERY SINGLE DAY of September! Share a comment each day before midnight EST for your chance to win that day’s random drawing. Be sure to leave links to your story shots.

Hiking through the woods is how I embrace the season. Fall colors won't peak here for a month yet, but I was surprised by all the bright orange leaves that had fallen on a recent hike up to the cabin where my father was born. The rain made the color of the moss and the leaves just pop.

Autumn – for me – is a time of new beginnings, because I associate it with the start of a new school year. It's been years since it has actually meant that to me, but I still get excited!

    Nerd that I am.

I love Fall with all the red and golden hues. Plus it means comfort foods, the warmth of the oven and the smells it brings with it……

There is something about a fair that symbolizes the fall to me. The sound of the announcer calling the dairy cows to their beauty contest. The smell of cotton candy and caramel apples. The warm sunshine and slight breeze from the highest point of the Ferris Wheel. Family outside together, celebrating the glorious day we have been given.

I have a new love this season. Football. More to the point, capturing the suspended action of players in mid-air, mid-tackle. My two sons are playing for the first time and after a lifetime of hating football, I'm now a huge fan (of their teams of course!!!) But going to the games with my camera and seeing the game through my lens…its so exciting! I've been printing out the pictures and giving them to the other parents. They LOVE having these pictures of their boys. I'm glad I can give that to them.

I love fall's cooler, crisp air. I love weekends on familiar, fan-filled bleachers watching kids and sports. In New England, the leaves and light change every day, making each errand and chore a delightful adventure!

I love the cooler, crisper weather, the bounty of the garden, the spicy aromas in the kitchen and the warmth of the harvest table.

I'm a midwesterner transplanted to Texas so I really miss the transition to fall. We're still having temps over 100 here, so it's hard to start celebrating a new season yet. But I am looking forward to our annual visit to the pumpkin patch and church fall festival next month!

I'm a midwesterner too, transplanted to the desert. I so crave a little bit of crisp fall action! And I miss all the apple orchards and pumpkin farms, too. I just may have to live vicariously through all y'alls photos. 😉

every Fall I used to hibernate, sleeping more, being more at home. but this year it's when I'll be travelling to visit my sister in London and to celebrate my mother's b'day in Lisbon. so it will be a busy Fall (although I still feel sleepy, lol). here is one photographic Autumn day, last week: http://www.anasofiaeugenio.com/2011/09/ten-on-ten.html 🙂

September to me is a beautful blending of summer and fall…warm days, chilly nights…but the change is in the air for sure. It is in September that I will make the first beef stew of the season…an autmumn comfort food for me.

I love autumn. I grew up in Texas so we never really had much of a fall or winter. I love living in a place now where we have leaves changing, cool breezes, and lots of yummy fall fruits and veggies (apples, squash, pumpkins… yum!). The colors of fall are my favorite. Nature really lets herself have a little fun when she paints the leaves, doesn't she?

Fall is my favorite season. Always has been! I too live in Southern California, but I find so much joy in seeking out the changes (VERY minor here as you know) that come with the change. The slightly crisp air, pumpkin flavored anything, my birthday, Halloween and Thanksgiving, the colors, sweaters…I could go on and on 🙂 Here is a post I wrote on my blog last year after taking Tracey's Picture Fall http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7320771465486590910#editor/target=post;postID=2632469067817048684

I love fall and winter, too. I am really looking forward to cooler days after the hot summer we had. The leaves are just starting to turn here now, but it will still be a few weeks until we really start seeing some nice fall color.

oh autumn! how do i love thee!

even tried to persuade my husband that if we had a daughter, we coul d name her Autumn since it was – and will remain – my bestest loved season. So much so that I look forward to it in August already because August and Autumn share so many of the same letters. lame, i know, but there it is.

autumn for me means BAKING! and rain drops. and cool, crisp skies. and snuggling in. i think of it like Spring's twin, but the more relaxed, calm and gentle side, since Spring is so spritely and bubbly.

autumn is also a time for reflection, Thanksgiving (Canadian, eh?!), birthday, Oktoberfest, Hallowe'en, back to school, wild winds and a return to scarves and snuggly sweaters.

oddly enough, though I have a large photo collection of Autumn beauty, none of it is online! but thank you for encouraging us to embrace this lovely season!
