Love

December 27, 2012 By Alex Desouza

As I sit here to write this post, I ponder on what else is there to say about love that hasn’t already been said and reiterated.

But here is the thing, when it comes to picturing love, it is probably the single most personal thing one can capture, because we each have been touched by it in a very unique and special way. Love that is bigger than ourselves, love that endures time and hardship, love at first sight, and love found in the most ordinary moments.

As we decompress from the hoilidays and start our countdown to the new year, I want to invite you to look at your own precious life with the intent of capturing love that is real and that is simply yours. The love only you can feel and see, but that is also understood and felt universally.

Shoot, share, and then tuck that sweet love reminder forever in your heart.

Texture

November 8, 2012 By Alex Desouza

I did not use to notice and play with texture in my photography until very recently.

When I first picked up the camera, I was interested in color. Color juxtaposition, colorful walls, details, etc. Color, color and more color! Later I discovered portrait and became completely enamored with capturing expression. People, styles, the beauty within, emotion, etc. Then I began to learn more about photo technique, and lighting naturally emerged as my next big interest. Morning light, golden hour, back light, and flares.

But texture has been making an appearance in my photos lately. I often catch myself looking for the right table to set my latte on (just so I can shoot it). I look for the right rug to step on, the right background to blur, etc. Texture can add a lot of spice to an otherwise seemingly uninteresting subject matter, and in some cases, it can also completely ruin a picture if it creates clutter. Our eyes like the effortless mix and harmony we find in nature. The smooth against the rugged. The lacey, sparkly, and furry, against the luciious soft skin.

But my point is… The more we shoot the more we learn how to see, and the more we see, the better we can capture and express our feelings. Texture is just one more of these things we can incorporate in our photos to help us get our point across.

How about you? Do you notice texture? How much do you play with it in your photos? Are you are up for some texture play? Share with us some texture candy today?

Just be you

October 25, 2012 By Alex Desouza

I am taking away one big lesson in life and photography from SS Oasis this year:

“We each have a very unique way of being, seeing, and shooting.”

I know it has been said before… But I’m so moved by the fact that we each have a very unique point of view. If you look at the photos tagged with #ssoasis on Instagram, you will see what I am talking about. Several times sisters gathered around the same subject, under the same light. And yet, every picture turned out completely different.

Do you know what makes you the awesome photographer YOU are?

Today, show us a picture that shows your very own personal style and visual voice.

shoes

October 8, 2012 By Alex Desouza

We are all quite obssessed with picturing our feet in cute shoes to show wherever we are standing, aren’t we? So I thought I’d propose something new! How daring! ๐Ÿ™‚

Today I invte you to share a shoe with a story.

These ones picture above were my daughter’s first chucks! She had just taken her first steps when I bought them, and so they marked a whole new beginning for us. I am forever grateful I pulled my iphone and actually snapped this as soon as I unwrapped them. As much as we can see her wearing this pair in all sorts of photos, this is my favorite shot because it tells in itself the story of an important milestone in our lives. Simple and quick to do. It will last a lifetime.

How about you? Show us that special pair you wore in that first hot date, the one you wore at your wedding, or the one your dog chewed on over the weekend. Tell us your cinderella moment if you must! We want to see and hear it all.

Give us a shoe with a story.

window light

August 23, 2012 By Alex Desouza

“In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary.” Aaron Rose

What could I possibly say about the magic of window light that you don’t already know by now? Window light is simply magical and it has been the inspiration of painters and photographers for hundreds of years…

I personally love to capture the contrast between light and dark areas, creating a certain mood that is equally beautiful for still life and portraits. But windows are also great for silluetting, for capturing texture and for lighting food. I also often shoot toward the window to get a glowy and dreamy background. The point is: No matter what you shoot and how you shoot it, as Aaron Rose says in his quote above, “in the perfect “window” light, everything is extraordinary.” So this is one sure way to elevate your day and find beauty wherever you are.

It’s your turn to share now. Look around and find the best window in da house for a quick shoot. What are your favorite ways to shoot that perfect ray of light coming through? Show us a favorite window shot today.

the open road

January 12, 2012 By Alex Desouza

Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.

Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune,
Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,
Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms,
Strong and content I travel the open road.

Song of the Open Road, Walt Whitman

***

I came across these words from Walt Whitman just at the end of 2011, and immediately felt a rush of energy, adventure and possibility. It whispered to me “Go. Do the things you want to do. The road is wide open.”

And of course, I couldn’t resist.

A minute later, my “word” came to me: Free. Free to be, to do, to go, to shoot whatever my heart desires. Free of road blocks… And especially the self imposed!

So, maybe you’ve already got your word already, but maybe you don’t. Either way you can join me on this. Close your eyes and see what pops up when you reflect on what you want to shoot this year. Don’t be timid. Go big. Is it pictures of your life? Is it editorial, advertising, stock? Is it a project you’ve kept in the back burner for while? Perhaps you want to step it up professionally. Or maybe what your dream is to just make time to shoot {period}. Whatever it is, if what comes up for you feels like a *super delicious* secret desire that burns your core and gives you butterflies in your stomach… You’ve got it. That is it. Now imagine the open road. Feel that you own it (because you really do own it). This road is totally yours to conquer.

The time is now.

“These are the days that must happen to you”.

Go.

Today I invite you to share images of open roads, paths, passages, doorways, or whatever may remind you that the road is wide open for you and that you, my friend, are leading the way (your way) in 2012.

Black and White

December 17, 2011 By Alex Desouza

Shot with PX600 Silver Shade

I just spent a couple of weeks in England, and the gloomy, short days, really got me in the mood for shooting black and white. After some practice, I decided to put together a list of the five top things I learned while shooting b&w:

1.When shooting black and white, the shapes in your scene are very important, because in high contrast, they will tend to stand out. Watch for diagonal lines (and/or other opportunities) to build drama and guide the viewer’s eye. Keep an eye on textures, shadows and highlights ~ use them to your advantage whenever possible, and avoid them when they might be too distracting.

2.Watch also for the negative space (white) and try to create a nice balance between shape x negative space, foreground x background, black x white.

3.Grays can be pure magic. Achieving beautiful grays is part of working out a good exposure setting. If you overexpose your shot, for example, you will get more whites and loose a lot of the detail in your grays. Try also to find a good balance of blacks, whites and grays, to avoid creating a flat image (with too much gray and no high points).

4.Gloomy days are great for dreamy, soft, B&W images, because they are low in contrast and allow you to get a better range of tones.

5.Nostalgia, sadness, loneliness and all sort of deep emotions are really emphasized in b&w. Use that to your advantage in the creative process. Push the mood with your medium.

How about you? Any b&w tips you would like to share today? How about some b&w images? We’d love to see.

Group Action

November 5, 2011 By Alex Desouza

This is a polaroid I shot at Shutter Sisters Camp, and one of my favorites, because it is not only extremely weird looking, but it is a photo of a photo of a photo! In the background you see a row of sisters jumping and shooting Kristin and Xanthe, who are in the foreground, shooting the sisters in action in return. Then, of course, there was me, shooting them all, as they faded back into the thick beach fog.

I’m seriously grateful for group photos, aren’t you? I think they each carry a story and fun energy of their own, almost always making us smile.

So today share your group shots with us, so that we may have a window into light, silly moments you witnessed. Make us smile and make us feel thankful for these special moments of gathering and laughter in our lives.

You, beautiful moment

October 15, 2011 By Alex Desouza

You, you only, exist. We pass away, till at last,
our passing is so immense
that you arise: beautiful moment,
in all your suddenness,
arising in love, or enchanted
in the contraction of work.

To you I belong, however time may
wear me away. From you to you
I go commanded. In between
the garland is hanging in chance; but if you
take it up and up and up: look:
all becomes festival

Rainer Maria Rilke

***

Dear Rilke,

We totally get it! A moment is indeed such a precious thing!

Thank you for praising it with your words.

Now, we will do so with pictures. ๐Ÿ™‚

Warmly,

Shutter Sisters

***
Go ahead, sisters, it’s all you, now!

Please share that special moment, a”festival” of color, love and magic you captured in one single click!
