behind the scenes story

September 16, 2011 By Xanthe Berkeley

It’s often the details that draw me in. The “behind the scenes” story, the non-staged and the natural, as you find them subjects.

Here it’s the cross of the bridesmaid’s toes, the light shafting across and her pretty nail polish applied especially for the wedding, that tells me the story of that day.

Do you seek out the details? Look for the behind the scenes moments? Please share them today. They tell a different story, and I kinda like it.

We giving away one $100 Paper Coterie gift card EVERY SINGLE DAY of September to one of YOU! All you have to do is share a comment each day before midnight EST for your chance to win that day’s random drawing. Be sure to leave links to your story shots.

It's always the details..and the stories I like to imagine and make-up behind the obvious story:

The story behind this image is related to a wedding as well. My son, married this summer. His brother stood up for him as his best man. Both are Marines, so they wore their dress blues and I dieted for months to fit into my dress. 🙂 After all was said and done, and the new groom was shipped of to Afghanistan 11 days later, I captured this shot of our attire hanging up in the makeshift dressing room I'd set up in my home office. I thought it really captured the meaning of this life passage for our little family.

I have a slightly different look… typically my husband or my dog will be with me while I'm out photographing and it always seems like they are in their own little world. So a couple of weeks ago I decided to capture what I always see out of the corner of my eye behind the scenes…

    http://www.michellebodamer.com/blog/2011/8/25/in-the-background-while-im-photographing.html

Typically I can see them reflected in the LCD screen on the back of my camera, sort of like a nice reminder that they are always there supporting me. 🙂

The detail shots are some of my favorite shots, and yet I don't often share them because I don't think people will typically appreciate or understand them. But they remain my favorites, like these from my favorite trip this summer to Nordegg: focus on his adorable hiking boots, and of the rock tower we made.

From a wedding I shot in August — ring bearer got very bored at the group photos and in my opinion, it's when the little ones get bored that things get interesting.

Yes! It's the details I love to capture, as I'm out and about. It's the details that tell the story for me. I love finding interesting scenes, like this one from a local farmers market. There is the real story and then the story I tell, the story I learn through the capture:

I always look for the untold story and they can be found in the details. When my niece had her prom, everyone was busy taking pictures of her in her dress. I slipped away and took pictures of her room: her bulletin board, her text books and her unmade bed.

I love this theme, because it's always when you get 'off the beaten track' and explore life 'behind the scenes' that you see the most fascinating scenes. That was my experience on a recent trip to China:
