color therapy

February 2, 2011 By Kristin Zecchinelli

“In the midst of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.”  -A. Camus

February is here,  the light is returning to the days ever so slowly. This is when winter seems to begin to drag a bit for me.  Others in warmer climates are already digging in the earth, planning gardens, seeing signs of spring bursting out around them while here I shovel inches upon inches of fresh fallen snow.  It is true that has a beauty all its own of course, but some days I need a distraction from the cold and white, so when my grocery store gets the first deliveries of lovely yellow daffodils I am powerless to resist.  I scoop them up in my basket almost giddy with glee.  I bring them home and lovingly arrange them on our dining table.  The rebel in me is saying,  ‘there winter, take that!’  Then I proceed to photograph them endlessly it seems.  The color almost takes on a life of its own.  I call it my winter therapy.  A girl has to have her coping skills, yes?!?

So today, show me your therapy when winter has gotten the better of you.  Find some happy color or warm light and lets melt away those winter blues.

Lovely image. Winter weather here in California, even in our mountains, is definitely on the mild side: http://instamaticgratification.wordpress.com/2011/01/11/368/

I can say that the best color theraphy is my collage work http://www.flickr.com/photos/gizoti/5230702005/
But the yoga retreat that I have been last month offered me great colors in the middle of winter

Aaah, nothing speaks of spring like sunlight on daffodils – lovely.

I'm having fun these days finding colours outside in spite of the bleak weather – like a brown door against a red wall:

I was in need of some winter sunshine this week.
I found it in the most unusual place: my fridge. 🙂

I do the same thing! Brightly colored, happy flowers add a lot to the every day grey and bleak feeling winter. Here are the flowers I have been enjoying so far:

    sunflowers:

Everyone needs a break from winter, especially today–we are getting slammed again with snow and ice.

I have a forest outside my house that I call the "Magic Forest" for photo shoots. It's bleak and has depressing trees in the winter…so I drag my models (many times my own kids) and put them in ultra bright colors and cowboy boots and shoot away. Always makes me feel better. I'm so excited when the green returns out there..it's a welcome homecoming, for sure.

I find that when the extreme chill hits and I start to feel sorry for myself I only have to look out my window to be reminded of just how lucky I am.

I tend to find great joy in the colour these guys bring to my day.

Kristin, your photo is beautiful! I totally agree about the color therapy, especially this time of year when many of us have seen monochromatic tones for way too many weeks. Flowers often provide my color therapy as well but my color therapy today was found in a student art studio.

I am right there with you at the flower section of the grocery store! Most weeks during the winter I buy myself a treat to help make it through the greyness of the season…It all starts with the primroses…

In Hawaii we had many gray and rainy days. We keep a string of white lights up all year round just in case the stormy weather hits. This year, we bought new and colorful place mats to bring in the color.
