For No Obvious Reason

March 6, 2011 By sarah-ji

I can’t tell you why exactly, but I love this photo. I don’t know much about rules of aesthetics that determine whether a photograph should or shouldn’t be pleasing to the eye, and quite frankly, I don’t really care about the rules. What I can tell you is that the first time I saw this photo, I was instantly smitten. Perhaps it’s because looking at it made me develop a narrative about the woman on her phone. Maybe it has to do with the perspective from which the photo was taken. Or it could be because nothing is really in focus in this picture. There is no specific reason for me to like this photo, but I can’t deny that I do find it beautiful, and that to me is more important than if a bunch of rules deem it to be a photo worthy of my admiration.

Today, share with us your images that you instantly fell in love with for no obvious reason. Who knows; maybe we’ll be smitten as well.

This cat shot was one of the first pictures I took after getting a DSLR, and then I just messed around with it slightly in iPhoto. It's a strange object to begin with, the top corner is totally blown out, and the colours are whacked, but for some strange reason it remains one of my favourites!

I'd say there are lots of reasons to like that photo ๐Ÿ™‚ I'm getting a lot of images I instantly enjoy out of my camera phone these days, like this one:

One of my themes this year for my 365 Project was Self Portraits. Each day, I wanted to have my self portrait reflect who I was as a person. I used this one to reflect the worry I experience as a mother of two teenage boys. They are my world and I hope and pray that God guides and protects them every step of the way. I really loved this photo from the start….I was just sitting on the couch in front of our big picture window snapping away. The shadows from the blinds on the windows perfectly framed my eyes, which I was squinting due to the sun shining through the window.

I love your photo, too. I love the lights leading your eye into the photo. I broke the rules of thirds in a shot. The suggestion is to have your subject "walking" into the picture. I loved that this girl was walking out of the picture.

The last picture of this post (http://www.amandasproject26272829.com/2011/02/_much-love-monday_04.html#tp) was a "love at first sight" photo for me.
I was watching a band play from a second-floor balcony area, and the blur caused by the low light situation made the picture look like a painting…like quick little brushstrokes…

I love this picture, I think in part for the heckling I received taking it (I lay down to get a different perspective).I'm a sunset junkie…but I really like to have something else in frame and when I saw the fence/gate…

Love the shot in the hallway. Love the light and shadow from the overhead lights.

Here's an image of mine that means a lot to me. One of these days when you spend time with one of your kids and everything is "ok". I look at this image and see what a beautiful young woman she's grown into.

This was the first of several "mistakes" I have come to love.

I had the flower centered in the frame, and just before pressing the shutter, I lost my balance. Can't explain why I love this photo. I just do.

All of the photos I took at my kid's last dance recital turned out blurry. I was playing around with the zoom on my new camera, figuring it out. But I fell in love with this photo & am not really sure why. It just makes me happy to look at it. They were dancing to Shakira's Waka Waka (This TIme for Africa) which is a song that also just inexplicably makes me happy.

I know a lot of times the reasons mine are my favorites are because I know some of the story behind the shot. I looove this shot for three main reasons: (1) I love motion blur (2) the outdoor festival we're attending is one of my favorite days of the year and (3) I love the girl.

I've spent the last 45 minutes looking at everyone's pictures and loving all of them! I love how photographs can touch us in ways we sometimes can't explain.

I instantly fell in love with this photo for a few reasons. It was the first snow of the season here and it was our puppy's first time seeing snow. I ran inside and grabbed the camera and stood inside the doorway and took her picture. I wasn't even sure they would turn out since I was in a hurry, but when I saw it I just loved it. I knew that she would never be this little again or experience her first snow fall again. I only wish I had found photography when my children were young so that I could have captured more of their firsts!

I love this image even though it's not totally in focus but you can feel the closeness between the 3 kiddos (they're cousins). And it reminds me of my childhood and summers spent with my sister & cousin – we were 3 peas in a pod like these 3

I didn't fall in love with one right away. I looked at my camera when I took it and thought "ugh. that's clearly not working." However, once I uploaded it, I started to like it and the it turned into one of my more favorite shots. It was one of those happy accidents as i started to get more comfortable with creativity and finding something in a shot I didn't intend. This, to me, represents how fleeting these types of moments and memories are with our kids.

Straight flash, cut her off, mostly rug…so many things going wrong in this picture. But at the same time I like it because it almost looks like she's falling out of the picture and saying, "hey! what are you doing?!". Or maybe I like it because it goes along with the chaos that happens when I'm taking care of the kids.
