Friday’s Featured Resource – Ali Edwards

September 26, 2008 By shutter sisters

Ali Edwards, Oregon Coast, Summer 2008

I don’t scrapbook. I tried it once many years ago and failed miserably. Don’t get me wrong, my pages looked pretty good but I only got 4 done. The End. But when I see the volumes of cool and imaginative scrapbooks created by the incredibly talented Ali Edwards, I swoon. Suddenly I become a scrapbook junkie. Course, I haven’t attempted it again since my first 4 pages but still, I like to look and admire what Ali has done.

When I visit Ali’s blog, I know I want to make something amazing with my photos but then I get overly-inspired and decide I’ll leave it for another day. But then today is gone. Sigh. So, when I read the invitation to join Ali in a simple project to record a week in the life of my life, my family, using my photos, featuring what I see as important today, I will admit, I got a burst of inspired energy and determination. Maybe I can do this. Maybe I’ll start today.

Why this project? Why now? I guess it’s just the thrill of having this moment in time distilled into something tangible. Something I can hold in my hands as a reminder of this priceless and fleeting moment of my life. I take photo and after photo and am usually content with that being the end result. But the idea of using photos as a springboard sparks my interest. It’s as if the photo is just part of the process. It’s a whole new perspective. And it’s as simple as a focusing in on just one week of my life. I think it sounds wonderful and I plan on taking Ali up on her invitation by following along with her on her blog to see what I can come up with. Why not?

Ali is a one woman resource and offers so much via her blog, her books, her columns, etc etc). I encourage you to click around and discover the magic that is Ali Edwards. She’s one heck of a creative gal who likes to share and sharing is good.

Speaking of sharing, Ali has offered to give away 4 books (1 copy of each title ) to lucky readers her at Shutter Sisters today. Be sure to leave a comment today to get into the running…prepare to be inspired. You have until midnight on Saturday to be included in the drawing.

Oh wow…I tried starting to scrapbook last year, but my time and attention kept getting called elsewhere. Maybe this is the inspiration I need to get back in!

i’ve never been very good at scrapbooking. i get overwhelmed with the supplies. we just picked up a notebook from muji that has about eight small rectangles per page and we’re trying to fill them with things from the week – receipts, movie stubs, pics, magazine clippings, etc. i’d love to win a copy of ali’s book as it would surely improve our efforts ;). her work is wonderful. thanks for the giveway.

Ali is amazing. I’ve been a long-time fan since I first stumbled across her in a scrapbooking magazine (I’m thinking it was Creating Keepsakes, but I could be wrong. My memory isn’t always the best, which is why scrapbooking means so much to me.)

Anyhow, I’m off to check out the invitation. I’m sure I’ll want to play along!

Even though I’ve gone to the "dark side" of scrapbooking (digital), I would love the chance to learn more from Ali. Thanks for pointing me to her blog.

Ali Edwards creates some awesome pages. Very clean lines and tells the story. So many people get caught up in the embellisments and what pattern paper to use instead of scrapping the picture and writing down their journaling. Ali is definitely a wonderful example of how to tell the story.

I’m SO excited about this. I love capturing the everyday and don’t do it often enough. It will be so fun to look back on what we were doing at this point in our lives, in 2008. I would love to see a glimpse of my mom’s "week in the life" at a similar point in her life, when I was a kid. What did we do each day? What were the everyday routines? Something so simple and yet so interesting.
Oh, and I’d love to win one of Ali’s amazing books! πŸ˜‰

LOVE scrapbooking. when i was pregnant with my only son i pre-made all his pages for a year. i knew i wouldn’t have time once he was here. it’s been 3 years and i haven’t even touched a photograph to one single page, yet. but i know there will be a day when i’m looking for a reminiscent hobby to indulge myself in while my son is off doing cooler things with Daddy. =)

then i’ll have a field day with all of these amazing photos of our beautiful life together. =)

But I am gonna try to keep the pace. I had a blast the other week with my new point and shoot (easy to carry around) just taking pictures of road signs in my neighborhood. Years from now, how likely is it my kids will remember the street they lived on? Let alone the ones that took us to school and back and all our favorite places? FUN! I like Ali’s approach to scrapbooking because I think that’s what scrapbooking really is – real everyday life. Many scrapbookers tend to get carried away with pretty papers and embellishments and leave out the journalling to create space for more pretty stuff. I totally approve of her ‘dare to write’, ‘imperfection is ok’ beliefs. Making memories last is all that matters, not so much design and supplies. So this coming week I am going to embark on this project with her as well! πŸ™‚

Wow. I am inspired. My mother never kept photo albums or took enough pictures to really capture our childhood. The things I want to be able to look back on are the things that make you say "those were the days" or "I remember that dress". I wanted to know who my mom was and how she viewed herself as a mom, as a wife, as a friend, as a woman. Ali’s project "A Day in the Life" is more than inspiring… its life changing and memory making.

Although I do not have children of my own right now, what an incredible way for me to start the process of my life with my husband… so our kids can see who were before we were parents. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Ali has definately inspired me to really look at my scrapbooking and to think about capturing the little memories and moments. When I first began scrapbooking I felt I had to only scrapbhook or capture on film that big event and milestones in my son’s life as well as in our family. Ali doesn’t just do that. I think that smaller moments get a person to really think back and and reflect. I am very excited to start this project and I am greatful that she is doing it again through her blog. I am a daily reader of Ali’s blog and I find her inspiring as a scrapbooker and in the way she looks at and lives life. I am also a "scrapbook failure". Years ago I made several great pages then the spark just died. For awhile my supplies lay dormant, but recently I’ve been trying to make an effort to revive my scrapbooking. I have all of Ali’s books, but I would love to give them to my mom so she can enjoy Ali’s creativity and wisdom as much as I do.

A week in the life – my life. I’m pretty good at taking tons of pictures of my children, and even sneak some of DH when he’s not looking, but I rarely get pictures that include me beyond the posed with a family member kind. This should be interesting, and a tiny bit scary, and a ton of fun.

You can imagine how different my life it now. I want to document a typical week…I am really excited to see the two weeks right next to each other.

I canΒ΄t believe! My two favorite blogs united in a project. As I read the AliΒ΄s blog every day, even as relay, because I always find something new, and really, I love what she does and how it expresses.

And all Thursday (even friday), since February, for me, is Love Thursday. I’ve learned to look at every day looking for good things, to find hearts in the sky, and I discovered many people with an incredible talent from which I learn every day.

I love to join on this creative week.

There is no better scrapbooker than Ali Edwards. Not that the pages are the most elaborate and have gobs of the latest and greatest product but because they’re so real. She truly captures what scrapbooking is all about. If you’ve never scrapbooked but take fabulous pictures think of what someone will wonder years from now when they see the picture. Who is that girl? Where was she? Why was she dressed up? Did she always wear a single braid? Get it? I have a fabulous picture of a little girl who somewhat resembles me and somewhat resembles my deceased Mother. Oh how I wish I knew who that little girl was! Haven’t done this project yet and am so excited she decided to take us all along for the ride! I’ll be snappin’ pics this week!

I heart Ali Edwards. This is the statement on repeat in my head everytime I see her name in Creating Keepsakes or any other scrapping mag I receive (there are like 4). Scrapbooking for me is an outlet and a vice. It has become more like an obsession. I’ve been following Ali’s blog for a few years now and love the glimpses into her life with her hubby and gorgeous son. And I love her style of scrapping – I like especially that she embraces simplicity – and reminds us that scrapping is about the story, recording the feelings and memories, not the striving for perfection in the creation of the art. Thanks for the chance to win!

Since Ali is the one whose clean, modern style and focus on telling the story of the everyday is what is inspiring me to start scrapbooking, I’d love to have one of her titles.

Right now I’ve got cardstock in three neutral colours and a few simple patterns for accents. All I need now is a small sweep of time, and I’m going to start. I want to be the photojournalist of my own life, to document all the everyday things, as a gift to the future me who may find them old-fashioned and charming.

i’ve tried to do a whole month before, but quickly lost the mojo. a week in a life– now that sounds more doable. i don’t know if a beautiful album will come out of this, but i sure would love to know how the heck i spend my days, coz they just seem to whiz by.

I, too was inspired by Ali’s challenge to use photos plus words as a springboard for creating something special and unique about myself and my daily life. I love the idea of the imperfections showing through, since that is what our lives are made of! πŸ™‚ And with a new baby and a move coming up, I think this is just the right time to be able to focus on something for me before the craziness ensues. And I’m also glad that I got to discover your blog because of the process. Thanks!

I am so scrapbook challenged that I just never know where to begin so I really liked Ali’s idea of scrapping a week of my life and what I do. Maybe that will get the ball rolling for me and I will get into scrapping my many, many photos that I have collected for years.

Thanks for the suggestion and I think maybe this is a place for be to be visiting more often to give me the inspiration I need so desperately. Linda

I have just returned from a weekend long retreat with my sister and additional friends. I was not aware of how wonderful Ali Edwards has been to the scrapbooking world. I have not been blessed enough to attend CKU but my sister has and knows all about ALI. I am starting the "A week in the life" project now and my sister is as well. I just wanted to say how special her contribution has been and how lucky I feel to be blessed by her thorugh my sister.
