His Story

September 10, 2011 By Paige Balcer

“I am loved and wanted and cherished beyond belief.

My mom and dad hoped, prayed and anxiously awaited my arrival and I did not disappoint. My entrance into the world was fast and chaotic, but beautiful all the same. I don’t know much about this place yet or what lies ahead in life. But I can already tell that everyone is cheering me on. And that feels nice.”

This is my son’s story, which is simple and brief at this point in his life. But all too soon, he will grow up and experience the complexities of the world. He will make good choices and mistakes, see beautiful and ugly around him, and feel joy and sorrow. But I hope he remembers how his story began, because that will never change.

How do you think the story of your beginning influenced the person you have become?

We are giving away one $100 Paper Coterie gift card EVERY SINGLE DAY of September! Share a comment each day before midnight EST for your chance to win that day’s random drawing. Be sure to leave links to your story shots.

What a beautiful little boy..and what gorgeous eyes.
Sometimes I think my story began in the rainy season..and thus – my love for the quiet of falling rain:

when I was born (nine months after my parents got married) my father was fighting in a war abroad. when he returned to us he had ghosts from that war and he soon became an absent figure. when my parents got divorced (on their 25th anniversaire) he chose to live as if we were never born and left us for good. having an absent father all my life and being the oldest of three sisters made me grow up dreaming about having my own family with a good companion. it is still a dream and I don't know if it will ever come true. all men in my life have left when I needed them the most. I guess I grew up to be a dreamer. I'm 41 now and I'm retired since last year due to health issues. blogging rescued me, it's where I share my creativity. I'm a hobbyist photographer and I love it.

Strong, independent, proud, would have been family characteristics I would have inheritated, even without the birth into a family about to deal with cancer, paraplegia, and the need to stay strong, independent, and proud.

I'm yet to bring someone new into this world, but many of my lovely friends have. With full admiration of my first girlfriend to have a child, I dedicate this posting:

Absolutely my beginnings influenced the person I've become – as did the life of my parents before I was conceived.
They grew up suffering the horrors of WW2; my mom growing up a refugee camp and my dad in a Russian prisoner of war camp from the age of 17.
They raised their children to be mindful and respectful and to appreciate even the smallest thing.

The things our children and grandchildren take for granted – even take as their due is beyond comprehension.
It's a different world. I think they will suffer for their excesses.

I have no photos to illustrate my story, but your prompt spoke to me and I felt compelled to respond.

Beautiful photo and post. So true, everyone has a story. Even the tiniest of us, even the ones with the briefest existence.

I have a lot of negative emotions from the beginning of my life. Those feelings help me be a better mom to my own right now. I hope they will remember simple, happy times!

It's amazing how we can have a story from our first push into the world.
Now my boys are old enough to start telling their own – still young – but the stories are theirs to share.

I was a 'love child' to the most unlikely of couples to make that sort of mistake– my dad, joining ROTC in college and going off to fight in Vietnam, my mom, an introverted class valedictorian. My grandfather thought that my dad was beneath his daughter and not worthy, but he saw his 2 younger children get married and divorced while my parents have stayed together through thick and thin. Now my dad has cancer; he's doing okay, thankfully, and should live many years, but there have been tough surgeries, long recoveries and uncertain times, but the commitment my parents have to get through this together shapes me now and I know how important not only love, but steadfastness is in the face of uncertainty. And I think their commitment and steadfastness were there since my beginning.

    I know what you mean.

When my kids were born, I felt this emotion to be protective of them. It's so hard trying to always keep them safe and it gets harder as they grow. Mine are now 8 and 3 and I feel this constant worry.

my mom took some medicine to prevent a miscarriage
she managed to keep being pregnant but i didn't want to be born
they had to pull me out with forceps
i was my mom' s first child and i was disabled
she could' t cope with not having a perfect child, as she couldn't cope with not having a perfect husband, marriage, home, interior, life
she was disappointed with her life and took it out on all of us
    we paid a huge price
    some months ago she died
we all feel a tremendous amount of space to breathe
some weeks before her death i spent a whole day at the ER with her and took some pictures
this one best expresses how i remember her
someone who desperately tries to control everything and everyone around her but is destined to fail
