hold hands and stick together

September 22, 2011 By Kristin Zecchinelli

Some days we just need the simplest of reminders. Just the other day I was escorting my “baby” to her brand new kindergarten room, outside the door was a poster with this poem. I remember reading this poem so many years ago and how simple it was, but so very true. It made me smile and feel a little more at ease with this big transition for my little one.  Kindergarten is good.  The rules are simple.  Re-reading this was good for my heart.

All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten

Most of what I really need
To know about how to live
And what to do and how to be
I learned in kindergarten.
Wisdom was not at the top
Of the graduate school mountain,
But there in the sandpile at school.
These are the things I learned:
Share everything.
Play fair.
Don’t hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life –
Learn some and think some
And draw and paint and sing and dance
And play and work everyday some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world,
Watch out for traffic,
Hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.”

~by Robert Fulghum

hmmm…I don't know that it's necessarily a simple truth, but it is a bit of poetry. The image is here on my blog (I just posted for today) : http://tatterededge.blogspot.com/2011/09/synergy.html

I find The Invitation so eloquently expresses the idea getting down to the core of things that really matter about a person. It's a favourite of mine.

I love this poem. I had forgotten about it and I think I am going to print it to hang on my fridge for a few weeks. A great reminder of how we should go about our time.

As a retired kindergarten teacher, I know this is how we lived our school day and hopefully those lessons will follow my students throughout life. I especially hope that they will remember to create and be creative each and every day. I love the photo.

Your STORY for today fit in perfectly with a picture that I was up in the night photoshopping. One that really caught my eye. Thought it told a powerful story for a better way of being able to hold hands with significant others in our lives. Shared this in my Thursday blog. am really so much enjoying these "stories" A powerful way of sharing inner thoughts and our photography! Best to everyone today! http://thebutterflymetamorphosis.blogspot.com/2011/09/be-authentic.html

No matter how many times I've read this..it always brings a smile to my face.
Can't say that this has anything to do with lessons learned in kindergarten..but thought it along the same vein of good fun:

My son just entered high school this year, and though he won't allow me to take many pictures of him, I still manage to capture a bit of his essence. Sometimes we just need to remember the basics to help get us through.

I am sure I read that poem at some point but don't remember it! It really does say everything!! That should be hanging in everyone's home I think 🙂

My life has been so chaotic and stressful lately that I am literally having to remind myself to do the simplest of things. Take a deep breath, slow down, take care of yourself, sleep… and a photo like this that I took for Picture Summer was a visual reminder of that. Slow down, take a breath and enjoy what's around you. Because I feel like life is just speeding by SO fast!!

What a wonderful poem…and so true! 🙂 I agree with Kathy O….i have a kindergartener as well, and boy are these lessons hard! Here is a shot of my daughter last week…we've been rather stressed around here…she was stung by a wasp a few weeks ago, and had a bit of a reaction which led to a prescription for an epi pen. Then we spent an entire week trying to figure out how the wasps were getting into our house (we live in a log cabin). Turns out they built a huge nest in our bedroom wall…ugh. Long story short, we removed the nest, but im pretty sure my daughter sensed the stress from her parents….but being 5, she went into play mode…dressed for the ball and then watched a mermaid movie! Look at how lost into the movie she is. I stopped, realized i needed to lose myself in a movie or play with her too….so i took this photo, and then sat down to watch the movie with her 🙂 Life is good!

My youngest child just started Kindergarten and I like to think she has learned many of these rules already from her 3 big brothers. My oldest son just adores his little sister…. and she adores him back 100%. Recently I captured this image of the two.

Thanks for the reminder Kristin! I'm sharing a picture from a couple of weeks ago. It's of one of my oldest and dearest friends who had her first baby in early July. I was able to shoot several sessions of her with her daughter before she and her family moved across the country for a new job. I know we both cherish the photos for several reasons, the celebration of a new "sister" as well as the beauty of a shared moment between friends.

This image brings to mind a hand holding shot that speaks to my heart. It is of my son and his new bride holding hands minutes before he deployed to Afghanistan. He called me this morning, in fact, and it was so good to hear his voice. Sadly, he was reporting that he lost one of his men while under attack. Prayers for him and his brothers are appreciated.
