Children are born true scientists. They spontaneously experiment and experience and reexperience again. They select, combine, and test, seeking to find order - "which is the mostest? which is the leastest?" They smell, taste, bite, and touch-test for hardness, softness, springiness, roughness, smoothness, coldness, warmness: they heft, shake, punch, squeeze, push, crush, rub, and try to pull things apart.

R. Buckminster Fuller (1895 - 1983)

Let’s see some photographs that interpret this gem—show us the scientists in front of your lens.

Megan is truly an experiential learner, so she put on the dress-up clothes, went to the “store” to shop for food (on the table there in the lower right), and got right to work churning the butter. I love the tennis shoes sticking out from the bottom of the dress!

How about "taste"-test for hardness, softness etc...?

She likes to taste test everything except food. (unfortunately)

Makes me wonder what a child 'scientist' might do with this:

Well first of all, my son Fuller is named for R. Buckminster Fuller. His first name is Buckminster. Obviously, we call him by his middle name.

I'm going to go ahead and submit my best shot Monday picture, since the science involved is cooking, and Fuller got to break his first egg. I'm kind of proud of both his accomplishment and the picture!

My son is always crouched head down to the ground, especially around water, looking for critters. Here's a couple:

i think they were aiming for....'how much water can i drink out of the end of the hose before exploding?'...and 'does sand mix well with water? in the mouth.'

Oh, there are so many to choose from. My oldest boy has been playing with temperature lately - specifically what to freeze:

And my younger one prefers wild animals to explore:

I love watching my daughter discover something new. It never ceases to amaze me what they will try and do. This is my contribution, testing out our center of gravity!

This isn't the best pic, but it is quite hilarious! Perfect for kids discovering new things...

And this captures childhood at it's best. Dressed up as a fireman, pulling around some ducks and quacking just like they would in real life.

Alli, I cannot get OVER that, that your son is named after Buckminster Fuller! That's wild. As I was writing the post I seriously put in a first draft, "...an extra ten points goes to anyone's kid whose name is Buckminster."

Hah! You win! So cool.

My daughter is a "true" scientist. She totally is into to science and nature. She would have stayed for hours looking at the wildlife.
