How I know I’m home (mid-2009 edition)

May 22, 2009 By Guest Shutter Sister

1. On returning to the house, my first cup of tea at the kitchen table (which always has a full bowl of fruit on it, above).

2. Finally lying down in my bed at night.

3. The smell of nag champa incense.

4. Resting my head on Marcus’ chest.

5. Sitting on our new swing at dusk! (preferable in concert with #4, above)

6. The smell of baking. Anything baking.

7. The sound of my daughter Alex singing quietly to herself in her bedroom.

8. Turning on the twinkle lights in our kitchen.

And you? These days, how do you know when you’re home?  Bonus points if you share images of those cozy corners of your own home.

(And for those of you in the US,  have a great holiday weekend.  If you’re traveling, come home safe!)

Nag Champa incense is my absolute favourite. Sleeping in my bed is right up there too, and knowing that my clothes are in the cupboard, and I’ve got everything to hand.

I suppose the "Oh My look how much housework I have to do feeling" ISN’T the answer you’re looking for?! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Though I am wondering if I iew each corner of my home as a "photographic "set" I may get more done lol!

I’ve been out of town all week and coming home was bittersweet. I’m not ready to feel much at "home" in my little city apartment when I just came from my brother’s cozy country house. So here is a picture that feels more like home to me than my own home right now. It is after a long day out in the garden, playing with 6 kiddos, getting them all peacefully sleeping and then cozying up on the couch to watch a little dancing with the stars online next to my brother and SIL. That really felt like home to me.

When my kids are out and my husband is traveling, the house feels a little more like home if I set a pretty tray for my lonely dinner:

we’ve moved so many times, that’s it’s always been hard for any place to really feel like home since our roots have never really taken hold anywhere…..but 2 years ago we bought a weekend home in the woods to call ours and now that’s what feels like home to us…and when you drive up the driveway, this is what greets us and reminds us to that life is short….sit back and relax…

I may have talked about this before, but it is the blue lights wrapped around the spiral staircase that tell me I am home. They were put up by my upstairs neighbor at Christmas, and brought such joy that she decided to leave them. It feels like magic to stand beneath them, and when I pull into the driveway at night & they are on, I feel myself begin to relax, to breathe more slowly. Add to that the sound of Willy deVille’s "Acoustic Berlin Trio" on the stereo, the scent of lime candles, and, lately, the scattering of paint & paper everywhere, as I prepare for an upcoming art show. This baby blue table at which I sit & type away, the big white bed awaiting me, the cat asleep in her latest place. All say home.

looks better than the inside of my home

Oh, I loved this post, maybe because I love HOME so much! I immediately sat down and typed out a long description of my home, but then felt it just fell short of being accurate. After I woke from a nap and followed the trail that I found, I decided to document home with my camera instead – specifically the evidence of my children.

    Thanks for the inspiration!

I open up the back doors so the fresh air can come in! I can only open three windows, so the doors are key to air circulation…and I like it that way. ๐Ÿ™‚
