impossible color

July 7, 2010 By shutter sisters

Although I do love a burst of vibrant color when the moment presents itself, processing on the side of impossible color isn’t usually my first inclination. But seeing that lately I’ve been encouraged to believe in the impossible, I find that reality-altering color-bending can be all part of the fun.

The expression from my daughter in this shot alone nearly stops my mama-heart but when something even beyond me takes a hold of my lens and freezes a moment it time as magic as this one, bold strokes from a playful and whole-hearted pallet are futile to resist.

Have you happened upon a shot like this in your collection? Something that calls for a treatment way above and beyond the ordinary? Share something processed off the charts today just for fun!

This photo is stunning! Not just the processing but the angle, the look and I so see YOU in HER. Wow. It takes my breath away.

Your photo is gorgeous, I always get so excited when I see a new post!!

I think this one of mine fits the bill, I also have a case of mama-heart or as I like to call it mummy-goggles. I very rarely get eye contact from my busy little 2yo so to have captured this one makes me very happy. I loved the original but the expression tempted me to go over the top with a moody processing, not at all like my normal images.

Keep up the great work 🙂

just last night i took a walk with my kiddos, this shot of them in particular seemed to just be right in an over-processed way. kind of blown out and extreme for me, but i loved it here.

sometimes a little help from another sister gets the job done better than you could have done yourself! This one uses Dawn Gordon’s super color preset and boy did it make all the difference in the world:

an amazing shot, Tracey, and an amazing expression you captured there!!!
thank you for this inspiration to play with processing and going over the top, it is very liberating sometimes to experiment with letting go of restraint (and very summery as well)!

I love doing a little of "this and that" in post processing to make things seem "impossible" as you say. You know… I think that the human mind is looking at photo this way and seeing them as normal. We can take a photo and envision the "impossible-ness" that exists beyond the camera. Its making for some very interesting can captivating shots that we either would have never achieved or would have thrown out years ago.

My post today kind of talks about that…

    Gorgeous.

My father and I just had a conversation about this very topic. I had sent him copies from a recent shoot and the response I got was "the composition and focus is great, but your color is no good…some are washed out and others are just…" He even tried to fix them and send them back to me! A photographer himself, and of a certain age, realistic color is the goal. I tend to play a bit. The recent trends of faded/wahsed out and non-true/80% blacks make him uncomfortable. Not to mention the Photoshop actions available for light leaks and processing errors!

Perhaps with advances in techonology, true color depends less upon skill, so we try to express our expertise, and our uniqueness by manipulating it? Oh, I don’t know…but I did know that THIS shot reminded me of Charlies Angles so play I did.

I did a photoshoot with my daughter out in our forest. The lighting was gorgeous and in her pretty Easter dress, she looked like a fairy princess. So I took some of the images and overprocessed them to make them POP.

I did that on this one, but in reverse. I outlined the flag so I could pump up the red and blue, then I desaturated the rest of the photo and burned the edges. It’s very processed, but I like it – and really, that’s all that matters, right? 🙂

I think of my photography as art. So any processing I do, is just part of realizing my artistic vision. This is one of the wonders of digital photography!!

Here’s one I did, not so much making it "over the top" on color because it truly already was colorful, but emphasizing it by making the rest of the photo b&w and a little bit of color pop:

beautiful and magical. almost looks like she has angel wings.

i recently took some colorful shots with a red umbrella, but although the umbrella made the pictures colorful as is, i wanted to process them in such a way as to make the reds stand out even more. so i muted the photos except in the areas where there was red, and i deepened the reds. although i was not really sure what i was doing, i like how my experimentation turned out. i love the deep red bursts against the muted colors in the sky and buildings.

I’m just the opposite of you Tracey. My natural inclination is to gravitate toward "impossible" color. Probably because besides being a photographer I’m also a painter. I like pushing artistic boundaries and expressing the kinds of energy and light I feel happening in my dreamscapes and inner landscapes.

She’s so lovely, Tracey. Ah, to be a mother of girls….

I don’t overprocess much unless, as you said, a moment calls for it. We had a school celebration this spring and the morning was particularly blinding white with spring, unbelievably alive with newness. In an effort not to drown the children in shadow, I had to open up the light a bit while revealing the white impression the light made. Here’s how they turned out:

What a gorgeous shot! I don’t have anything recent that I’ve really done crazy processing with (this year it’s been tending more towards a muted approach), but I do love what the Hipstamatic app does for shots taken with my iPhone! With all the different "lens" and "film" combinations, you never know exactly how its going to turn out! 🙂

It’s been SO long since I’ve posted – busy, busy, busy. I even have a fourth child now! But this one really caught my eye, and I’m taking the time to get back into the swing here, especially since I’m becoming an official business with this photography thing now!

My oldest was out in her fairy wings, and I threw the shutter speed way down for a fun overexposure. I got a nice surprise, and, when I took the saturation way up, came up with a photo I just LOVE.

These jerseys which are interestingly termed retro basketball jerseys are old school. Here is an example, men football jerseys, Kobe’s jersey at the present time, but the Lakers look 20 years ago. That would be an example of the throwback kind. Sports stars put them on now and again during games also.site:http://www.nfljerseyonline.com
