morning light

November 6, 2010 By Alex Desouza

Lest we would sift it down
into fractions, and facts
certainties
and what the soul is, also
I believe I will never quite know.
Though I play at the edges of knowing,
truly I know
our part is not knowing,
but looking, and touching, and loving,
which is the way I walked on,
softly,
through the pale-pink morning light.

Mary Oliver, Why I Wake Early (2004)

Oh! These words speak so much to me right now as a new mother…

You might remember me saying that I was feeling like a fish out of water, spending lots of time at home and not knowing what to shoot inside. Well, I guess I needed a change of focus, no? How timely is our word, right?

This week, instead of wishing my days were like they used to be, I simply allowed a shift. I pulled out my camera and sank into the new life. The life that is looking, touching, loving (my baby girl), and having the chance to actually notice and shoot the morning light. There is something just irresistible about a bed undone and the soft morning light coming through the windows, isn’t there?

So today I invite you to join me by sharing images that show how the morning light wraps around your home, those folds in your sheets, how it grabs your focus, how it softens everything, how it melts your heart…

What a nostalgic capture. I'm glad you had a breakthrough.
Sometimes our cameras adjust very last.
Morning is the most magical time of my life,
    almost every day.

Yay for making that mental shift! Good for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

I love morning, but these days mornings are often too hectic to stop and appreciate the moment. This Thursday was the first morning in a long time that we didn't have to rush out the door and go to preschool or errands or anything, and the morning light on my front porch was just so perfect:

Very appropriate post for me today… an early morning appointment got me out in light I seldom see thru the lens!

I'm so pleased you finally allowed yourself to embrace the shift.

You asked for photos of sheets and such — I am not at all a fan of photos of sheets so I hope you'll permit me to share this morning image in my kitchen:

I love this post…thanks! When I was strictly a still-life photographer, I just went without if I couldn't maintain focus in natural lighting. With my busy bee toddler, I often have to resort to a flash just to grab the memory. There are, however, lots of times when a flash would ruin the moment. I discovered I can shrug off the focus and treasure those images anyway.

This challenge inspired me. Even after three children, I sometimes yearn for "time". Time to relax, time to create, time to look and see and wonder. Time to be.

So, after reading your challenge, I took time. Time to absorb the moment. Time to fall in love all over again. Time to adore.

Morning light, unmade bed, and my four-week-old daughter.

I love the morning light of fall in Oregon. The rainy season has started and the sunlight just feels damp. It's cool and misty and thick, without being muggy and I just adore it.

Even on mornings I wake up at 5am after tossing and turning for hours and finally decide to get out of bed and take pictures since I'm awake anyways.
