overcoming your gear: let’s call it sharking (and, a giveaway!)

I’ve stood there in shops, staring through glass at glass… coveted glass.

$1599.99. $989.99. $1249.99. Even if I did have the money, how would I ever choose? I need a macro as much as I need a wide-angle. Instead my camera bag is filled with hand-me-downs and compromises, an extremely limited selection of what are generally considered the most ineffective, inexpensive, kit-grade lenses Canon has ever produced.

The Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II lens is a very inexpensive starter lens with a low build quality. As long as the person using the 28-80 knows its optical shortcomings, that designation may be fine. Otherwise, they may permanently be turned off by its performance. Its optics are mediocre at best, making it nearly impossible to get ultra-sharp pictures. The price is cheap, and so is the lens; the overall workmanship and quality is low.  ~ The Digital Picture

Lately, that’s the one I use most often for nature shots, including the one above.

Build quality of the 50mm f/1.8 is very cheap (as you might expect). This lens feels more like a toy than a piece of optics, with plastic contruction right down to the lens mount.

There is not much to this lens. There is no distance window or markings. There is barely even a focus ring – and the tiny ring that is there is barely usable. Only five non-rounded aperture blades are used in this lens, leading to poor bokeh (image quality of out of focus areas).  ~ The Digital Picture

That’s the one I use for portraits, though I’d give it a better review than that.

And that’s pretty much it. A lensbaby for play, as-yet unmastered. A 10-20mm wide angle that’s slow, tough to focus precisely, and distorting around the edges. All mounted to a camera body that’s widely considered to be the beginner point for SLRs. Except it’s been my starting point for years.

I have never used a good lens, let alone a great one. The same goes for a camera body. I’m afraid to even pick one up for the sake of mortgage payments.

Our village is filling up with summer residents, rich folk from the States, England, all points in Europe. With the onslaught of Porsche SUVs comes an onslaught of boats that eat money, sails that literally sparkle, crews outfitted in matching gear.

We’ve got a 40-year-old Shark, adopted, a family of small boats not seen much around these parts. Justin’s spent years sandblasting the keel, replacing the bulkheads, poring the internet for used sails.

“It’s so demoralizing,” he said after yesterday’s race. “We came last. I can’t compete with those guys. They’re laughing at us. I don’t even have a roller furling for the jib. The rigging is from the 1960s. There’s no way I can race that boat. I don’t know why I bother.”

Later, when the race results came in, Justin was shocked to discover that he hadn’t actually come last. He’d beaten two boats of the fleet. Two better-equipped boats designed to go fast. He beat them because he’s a good sailor. Not because of his boat, but in spite of it.

I feel the limitations of my gear every time I reach for my camera. Clunky, lightweight, noisy, imprecise. I see it when I download, my best-case focusing turning out about as well as I imagine others’ worst-cases.

But every now and then, someone who knows about cameras looks at my images and says, “What do you shoot with?” and I tell them. And in that moment, I get… props.

None of this is a competition, but indulge my metaphor: when it comes to light-bending and composition and storytelling with my camera, plenty of people are ahead of me. I’ll never catch them—not with this glass. But I’m not DFL, either (to borrow from the nautical, Dead F*cking Last).

And for now, I’m content with that. I’ll keep pushing, nudging, compensating, overcoming, until $1249.99 falls from the sky into my lap.

  4. recently, i chose a Quaker Oats pinhole camera built over 20 years ago by a college friend to complete an assignment. this included pouring chemistry in the darkroom. days of delight have followed. a deep and basic delight in the process but mostly of the magic that is photography. it is nice to step backwards to see, exhale, and compose.

  5. oh i hear ya. sure, you’ve outgrown your gear but that’s a (relatively) easy fix. the truth is: you can *see. and that is what others lack. all the gear in the world doesn’t make an artist. just like all the money in the world doesn’t make a sailor.   6. I could have written this post. As in, I think we own the same gear. 🙂 And sometimes I am really frustrated by its limitations. Other times, gratified by what I get with my "beginner" "toys." I loved honey’s comment above, "a deep and basic delight in the process." I remind myself that no $$$ can buy that.

  7. i’d say that i’ve recently come to the realization that my gear is more confining that empowering just because i feel overwhelmed by it and then don’t use any of it!! working on simplifying and just getting out there to enjoy instead of overthinking it!

  8. I’m a big believer in the thinking that the image is made by the image-maker..and not by the fanciest of equipment and highest priced lenses and optics. In other words – it’s all in the eyes of the beholder!!

  9. I am working with the original (as in first release) Canon Rebel with the kit lens that came with it. I also have a very cheap zoom lens and probably the same 50 mm lens that you described. Despite having owned this camera for years, I am just beginning to learn how it functions outside of auto mode. It isn’t my equipment that is limiting me – it is my phobia of trying to learn all the technology it holds!

  10. I have a decent body and low level lenses. I tell myself that I will treat myself to some high end gear once I start "making some money". But until then, I am satisfied with my gear, but I wonder what more I could do with the good stuff!

  11. I also believe that the image is made by the maker, you can not buy creativity, yet good glass does make a mighty difference. I have some kit lenses and some great glass… I still use all of them. It depends on what I have in mind for the end result. I am delighted with all of my gear and hope to continue to build up my collection.

    After I spent hours on line this weekend checking out new camera gear, this was just what I needed to read.

    Lately I’ve been coveting another PowerShot … maybe a G11 or some other newer, faster, not so little go anywhere brand. My G9 has severed me well, but it’s just about toast.

    I really bad in that I have good glass and it just sits as it’s too big to lug for all the shooting I do on the go. It’s not quite what I thought I’d be doing with my gear after moving to the UK. I used to shoot weddings in the US, but here less people seem to get married or sadly want professional for too little money to make it worthwhile.

  13. I have great gear and I have good gear and I find that it is not the gear that counts. It is the shot. The skill of the photographer. THAT moment.
    I decided not to take my heavy solid nikon300 to NYC recently, I took a Canon point and shoot and I am thrilled with the pictures. Really, it is the photographer not the goods. A poorly composed and exposed picture taken with a fabulous set of tools cannnot compare to a terrific shot with a mediocre camera. That’s what I think…… 🙂

  14. i would never have known your equipment was limited, i’m in a similar boat to you and manage with what i have, dreaming of new glass and a top end body and waiting for that envelope of cash to land in my lap, but i do hold close to me (and it’s true what meredith said), that it’s your EYE that’s the most key ingredient. Yours is priceless.

  15. my cheap 50mm f 1.8 is my very favorite lens, because it gives me the effect i’m looking for — dreamy, blurry, and light-loving. i’m not drawn to super-sharp images anyway — to me life is usually messy and blurry — so i’m happy with what i have.

    that’s not to say that a wide-angle lens isn’t on my shopping list. just not today. 🙂

  17. SO glad to hear someone else has the same longings as I do. I love my camera, take fantastic pictures, but the customers don’t see the lack of clarity in some of the images. I have started saving my money for some new glass. Thanks for letting me know I am not alone in the lens world.

  19. almost all of my gear is hand-me downs and it mostly overwhelms me and makes me feel guilty for not knowing how to use it more effectively. but whenever i borrow a friend’s i appreciate it for all that it does.

  20. My limitations are in my mind. I’m such a rational person that I have difficulty seeing things different than how they present. I don’t automatically think to get down low or take the shot from a different angle or even what makes an interesting photograph. I’m trying really hard to think outside the photo.

  21. oh yes, i can relate. i only have the lens that came with my NIkon but i have big dreams and although i think a new lens can do wonders it’s the eye and the heart and the intuition….AND a super cool fancy new lens! awesome give away!

  22. I too have lens envy…BUT have done the best I could with what I have 🙂 I have one of the lens stated above and had I not had that lens I wouldn’t have been able to capture one of my all time favorite pictures of my two year old. =0)

  23. Generally, my gear confines me. I have two cameras, and the one that I’m most comfortable with is the one I use almost exclusively. Sometimes I wonder if i wouldn’t be better if camera #1 "disappeared" (I don’t really mean this, and I feel like I have to state this in the post in order not to jinx myself). Perhaps then I’d spend the time that I need to spend exploring what camera #2 can deliver and what I can achieve with it. Nevertheless, I’m grateful that i have the luxury of a choice.

    I’m afraid that there are no new lenses in my future during the remainder of the year. However, I’ve been eyeing a Diana and eyeing may turn to lust, after which all bests are off.

  24. This theme resonates deep for me today. It’s absolutely horrifying for me to wish for more than I already have; which I am, indeed, absolutely grateful for. My mama bought me my D90 for my 30th birthday, what a most amazing gift. I have one other lens that my lover bought me and I feel pretty darn blessed. I think the only time my lack of equipment (or good equipment) gets to me is when I get caught up in what everybody else has – and that is just crazy. When I get the ‘gimmies’ or the ‘i wants’ I just remember the old adage that beauty and art are about the person holding the camera and not the camera (or glass) itself. …Now should I ever hit the lotto it may be a different story entirely!   25. I love your post! I’m in the same boat. I have the original Canon Digital Rebel. For the most part, I’m just so grateful to have my DSLR and love learning more everyday. I love the thrill of shooting and discovering and revel in the moment when I capture that special image. On the otherhand, it’s hard not to realize that today most point and shoots have more megpixels than my camera and I long for more glass. I have a Canon 75 -300 that I LOVE and then discovered that it’s only an "OK" lens in the overall scheme of things.

  26. That piece could have been written by me. I have a kit lens that came with my Rebel, the cheapest Canon DSLR. And I just bought the 50mm f1.8 II the lens with so much auto focus noise.
    I’m happy with my tiny gear. Sure I’d love more, I’d really love a macro lens but that’s not going to happen this year. I understand my camera, I know how to use it, I know what it with do for me and what it will give me. It’s also not too heavy. I’m happy with what I got.

  27. I think all of us with Canon’s have the cheapie 50mm f1.8 lens. It is my lens of choice. It stays on my camera ninety percent of the time. For my birthday, hubby said I could get a new lens, pick it out myself. I’m totallly freaked. I don’t know enough to pick out a good lens!

  28. i love my nikon d3000. it’s nothing too special, but it helps me create gorgeous photos every day! i use the simplest lens that i purchased with the camera. right now i’m not at a place where i can afford a new lens, but i plan to get a new one within the next few years. however, i feel that it’s the photographer that makes the photos, not the equiptment. 🙂

  30. Wow – what a lot to ponder! I have to share with you: I learned a few years ago of a very popular fashion photographer (I forget his name now as I don’t follow fashion – hah!) who solely used a point-and-shoot camera to take all of his shots. Those shots were published in magazines. Goes to show you it isn’t the equipment but the person behind it.

    That being said, the gear DOES make a difference in oh-so-many circumstances. I have the Canon XTI with kit lens and long for a macro…any sort. Oh, and of course the t2i so I can capture HD video! Ah, but for now I’m trying to celebrate all my other creative avenues and let my voice be heard regardless what tools it uses!! Thanks for a great post!

  31. I was going to order a nice, new and expensive piece of glass this morning. Really. I decided first to check my favorite blogs and thankfully read your post. Maybe I will love my 50mm 1.8 a little longer and work more on lighting and composition. Thanks for your post. It was exactly what I needed to read.

    I love my camera. In fact I take it everywhere I go. I am fairly new and it is easy to get sucked in to all the products we just have to have. It is nice to know all the expensive toys aren’t needed.

  32. I have a lot of fancy gear, but I will be the first to admit that gear is no good unless you have an eye for photography. You, my friend, have that. And when you DO get the fancy gear? Watch out world.

  34. I have a good macro lens that I love and have even used for some of my favourite portraits. My biggest issue is with my body – specifically the noise it produces. It’s a good camera, but not great for my favourite shots, which are handheld macros, so I sometimes have to either bump the ISO (see the aforementioned noise), or admit the light isn’t going to work. I dream of upgrading, but I knowit’s not in the cards for this year.

    (I’m also trying to make friends with my 50mm f/1.8, but so far no dice. My shots are almost always blurry.)

  35. I was a "kit photographer" for a long time with nothing special going on except the camera I used. Recently I upgraded my camera and bought a macro lens. The process of buying a lens was so daunting I almost didn’t know where to begin! I ended up going with something cheap that had a lot of great reviews. While its not the best of the best it works wonderfully and is a great stepping stone to more expensive equipment.

    By cheap, learn, and then grow into something more pricey!

  36. does my equipment define me ?……does the fact that it acts like an oxygen tank to me mean anything……like take my camera, and i stop breathing and I wouldn’t have a clue as to what to do with myself…..

    yep, it defines me alright…..and when i show up anywhere without my camera….i’m asked where it is 🙂

    i love my macro….and my new 17-60 lens that i use now for almost everything….but my zoom at 300, oh you gotta love being able to spy, which is what i feel like i’m doing when i shoot with that 🙂

  37. Love the article. Good dose of reality. I have a ‘confused’ relationship with my gear. As in – what to do? I love photography but have only picked it up in the past couple of years as a hobby. I can’t rationalize spending a ton of money on gear. At the same time, I want what I have to help my photos rather than hurt them (I need all the help I can get). Couple that with the fact that I’m lazy and won’t lug around a bunch of stuff. I’m on a neverending search for the "perfect" lens. I have a crop sensor and upgraded my kit lens to the 17-50mm 2.8 Tamron. Love it – it really has helped indoors. Now, I want something longer with a relatively low aperture but that has proved elusive. And I don’t want to carry around 5 extra pounds. And I don’t want to spend the equivalent to a mortgage payment. I’m obsessive about reading reviews too. I love the ones that say – just spend the money – you will be happy you did. No matter what they say, $1300 vs $500 is a lot of money and my untrained eye won’t notice the difference. Do you know how many shoes you could buy with the difference?? I also have the so called "cheap" 50mm 1.8 and LOVE it. Can you see my issue? Anyone have a perfect (reasonable) walk-around lens that has a longer reach than 50mm?

  38. I have a wish list on BH filled with a 5d mark ii, 50 mm 1.4, 24-70mm wide angle lens, among other things. Unless I win the lottery it’s exactly what it’s titled. A wish list. But I, like you, manage to get compliments on my photos somehow..and I guess that’s really all that matters. <3

  39. When I finally decided to go digital, I was very hesitant to invest a lot. I’m so thankful that my husband pushed me to get some gear that I could grow into. Little did he know I would become addicted and now long for thousands of dollars of lenses and a full-frame body.

  41. Good post! My gear has evolving all year and I’m not there yet! I am the process of developing an appreciating for fast lenses, as I don’t like to use any flash. I’m narrowing down my favorites and considering selling a few, including a kit lens which I no longer use.

  42. What a great post! I, too, am the proud owner of a Canon Rebel, the kit lens, a 50mm 1.8 lens, and a low end zoom lens. It goes without saying that I want to upgrade the camera and buy better lenses. But not having had the pleasure of using top quality equipment, I guess I don’t know any better. I take good photos with the equipment I have, I get good comments on my photos, so for the most part I am satisfied. Having said that, a Japanese tourist asked me to take a photo of him and his wife in the center of London last week as he handed me his Canon 5D…I can still feel the delicious weight of it in my hands and hear the beautiful sound of the shutter as I took the image!! It was heavenly…

  43. I never felt defined by my lower end gear until I joined a camera club. The members seemed to have an unofficial competition to see who could walk in with the most current (ie, just released) gear. I felt like the class dunce. Then I began to notice that the people that were most into their gear weren’t the ones getting the most ribbons in the monthly competitions.

  44. I’m a beginner, so I have beginner gear. Honestly, I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference, so I’m obviously not ready for it. I have 2 lenses that do enough to keep me busy for a while. With everything I do, from pencils to pool cues to saddles to cameras, I try to stick with beginner gear until I can appreciate the difference. Then I feel I’ve earned it.

  45. My relationship with my gear is plutonic. Lots of give and take from both sides: my gear helps me define my vision, but my vision is not dependant on my gear. Some of my favorite shots have been taken with my point and shoot purse camera lately. I am most grateful for my techno-savvy husband who reads all the reviews and finds the best deal on the gear I covet. He fueled my obsession with photography when his Christmas gift to me was the original digital Canon Rebel way back when. I truly am a lucky girl.

    great equipment is only as great as the sensibility of the person using it. I like to think my equipment doesn’t define me; I expand upon it. (But yes, I did treat myself to a 50mm 1.4 lens and love it!)

  48. this post warmed my heart. i just got my first dslr, after years of pining and scheming. i had to buy it used on ebay for the cheapest i could find, with a kit lens, and clean it up when i got it. the only other lens i have afforded myself is an old 50mm prime lens that i have to focus manually and meter by eye.

    this spring, i took my first photography class with my "new" camera and all the other ladies in the class had money to burn and incredibly drool-worthy equipment. but with a little hard work and heart, i think that i showed that there is more to it than what money buys.

    it is so easy to get intimidated by what others have and be tempted to be dissatisfied with what we have. but in the end, a little work and a lot of heart goes a long way, i think.

  49. I’ve spent years honing my skills and working with the original Canon Rebel and the nifty fifty. My husband surprised with the L series 35mm 1.4 for Christmas last year and while it’s sharpness and bokeh blows me away it doesn’t teach me how to take better pictures. That’s still on me.

  50. Sometimes you need to hear that someone else is feeling slightly less than last too. I have made myself a promise not to do any gear shopping until christmas. I have been building up with used gear for a year now and can make due. but MAN would a $1200 lens be nice!

  51. I love my nifty fifty – even with it’s shortcomings. I keep telling myself that when I get "composition" nailed, I’ll invest in better glass (got a long way to go)!

  52. I felt like this for awhile, but with how I’ve been approaching my business model, I’ve been upgrading my gear first. I’m happy with my gear, except for the fact that sometimes I wonder if it makes it too easy. Is that possible? That my creative edge becomes dull from ease of use, quality, and practicality? Sometimes I resort to only my cell phone to keep the creative juices flowing 🙂

  53. Cheap is my middle name! Since I am a beginner, I have the canon rebel xt and the only lenses I own are the ones that came with the camera: the EFS 18-55mm and a zoom 75-300mm. I happen to love a few shots I’ve taken with these lenses, but I do salivate over the macro! I’m always wondering what my next lens should be?

    I am really not an equipment/gear person at all. I am strictly an amateur and have no plans to become professional…I just like taking photos for myself and my family…I have been very happy with my G9 point and shoot for the most part…and it is fun trying to get the most out if it that I possibly can. It is also easy to throw in my pocketbook and therefore I always have it with me…and as everyone knows the best camera is the one you have with you.,,Unfortunately I have gotten a scratch on my baby’s lens and this led me to upgrade to a Rebel with a kit lens which I have been having fun with too. This doesn’t mean that I don’t have a wish list …I’m eyeing a G11 and a zoom lens, and a 50mm prime lens, and a Polaroid SX-70…but I will be happy without…

  55. I have a wish list, and if I won the lottery I would no doubt go crazy, but for now I am (mostly) happy messing around with what I have. Shiny new lenses would make me happy, I expect, but I’m not unhappy now.

  56. I hear ya sister! I think I own the same crappy lenses that you do. However, I’m a beginner, and I’m ok with what I have, especially since I did just plunk down the big bucks for a 50 mm 1.4f lens – and I love it. I’m reluctant to shoot with anything else now, so while I love the lens, it is a big confining. I’m a long time knitter, and I work at a yarn store. I always encourage beginners not to go with a cheap acrylic for their first project because to really develop a love of the craft, you have to love the yarn, and what you’re making. And, I feel the same way about photography to a certain extent – I’m so glad that I made the investment in the one lens – I know that by using this lens, I will want to continue to shoot, get better, and maybe next year, invest in the wide-angle. Baby steps.

  57. I’ve been really frustrated with my gear lately. Everything needs a professional cleaning. I have a spot that reappears in my photos. I want a new lens to get me excited again. I haven’t been shooting as much as a result. Oh, and I love my main lens 17-85 but the nifty fifty is mostly useless these days. I have some sand in the dial so it won’t auto focus and overall I’m just not that happy with it. Oh well! I might get a fuji instax just to get a bit excited about shooting again.

  58. My relationship to my gear is definitely Not a struggle. My gear, especially my camera and lenses are the tools of my trade. I’ve learned — no, I continue to learn — how to use them to their best advantage. I appreciate them and how they help me to create art through my camera and lens.

    My gear DOES NOT define me, nor confine me. I can squeeze a lot out of my equipment. In fact, I shocked many pro photographers and amateurs too who learned I was using a dynamite little D40 that put out some pretty fantastic images. Sure, that D40 is now primarily my back up camera, but just because I’ve been using a D300, does not mean my photography improved. It only added another layer to what I already had.

    Future equipment will be some lighting plus another portrait lens. As much as I’d LOVE a macro lens, a macro simply doesn’t make sense for my work right now.

    I appreciate the equipment I do have and I steer away from trendy equipment such as Lens Baby lenses. I guess I’m more pragmatic than most, but that’s me :~)

  59. My equipment and I are just starting to get to know each other. We’re at the beginning of what I hope is a very long relationship. I have two lenses: a big one and a small one. The big one is great for it’s zoom and the small one is excellent at taking portraits, especially at night.

    I really do love them both and my Canon 7D but we’ve got a long journey ahead of us. A journey that I am really really really looking forward to.

  60. yes yes yes! i too have the entry level nikon dslr. no fancy glass and a whole lot of kit plastic, but trust, always trust it is the eye, not the equipment. sure i’d love money to fall from the sky so i could upgrade of course i would. but even with a point and shoot, it is all in the eye.

  61. I bounce around using different cameras but have definitely discovered that under certain conditions with specific requirements for the result, the better camera wins the race.

  62. I can’t say that I have the worst gear in the world; actually I think it’s pretty darned good. But I can totally relate to your feeling, whenever I visit my local camera store and they chuckle at my "off – brand" equipment and ask when I’m jumping ship to <insert top two DLSR brands here>. My reply, whenever you’re donating the equipment.

  63. I love my camera (Panasonic GF-1) for its size and portability and crystal clear images. However I also feel limited by it – I covet (COVET!!!) a macro lens. I love doing extreme depth of field images and can get the focus I want, but not close enough to the subject – I always have to crop in to get exactly the composition I picture in my head. But I think the limitations of my camera have forced me to be more creative with how I shoot and edit my shots.

  64. My gear (nikon d90 with 18-105mm kit lens+ 50mm/1.4) is not nearly what you’d call ‘fancy’ or even close to professional, but it allows me to capture photos that my point-&-shoot could never measure up to. For that I am grateful…

  67. I have a love/hate relationship with my camera. I too have the Canon Rebel XTi. I’m happy and grateful for the lenses that I own, even though I want more, more, more! I sway from being happy and grateful with what i have to coveting and dreaming and putting items in my Amazon cart just to see how much it would all add up to, then I go check my money tree and sadly no money ever grows on it!

  68. A few months ago I purchased a Nikkor 35mm…at $200 it is the ‘cheapest’ lens in my bag and surprisingly it’s turned out to be my absolute favorite. I use it for everything and I get cranky on the rare occassion when I have to switch over to my (waaaay more expensive!) macro lens. Just goes to show, don’t judge how happy you’ll be with a lens by it’s price tag 🙂

  69. You know what, I have all the gear I’ve ever wanted… Nikon D3s, Nikon 300s, 17-35mm 2.8, 24-70mm 2.8, 70-200mm 2.8, 105mm Micro and a 10.5mm Fish Eye Lens. I won’t be mentioning all my lighting equipment… but I will give up everything just to have your creativity and passion. Everyday I visit ShutterSisters and I love all the images here and realized that the equipments are just tools, it depends on who uses them. My pictures are stupid… how I wish I can buy creativity.   70. I feel the same way. I have a Rebel and the 50mm lens you mentioned above. I just got a new lens as a graduation present but it’s definitely in the "affordable" range. I often see beautiful images and think I need fancier glass to capture that kind of beauty. But then, I get a compliment or two on my own photos. "You have a great eye!" is my favorite because it implies I did something – I used skill/talent/whatever you want to call it and made my camera work for me. And in those moments, I love my camera precisely because it does work for me.

  72. I feel as though I have outgrown my gear. It’s been more than two years since I bought my first DSLR and my 50mm 1.8 lens and I feel as though it is confining my development as a photographer.

    That being said, I am grateful for the past two years where I learned about composition and how to use my camera, rather than merely falling back on the equipment.

  74. That sounds familiar :). I actually ‘honed my skills’ on a canon point and shoot from 2000 (that I acquired 2nd hand in 2004). For all of its limitations it was actually a great camera once I learned to trick it into doing what I wanted. I think those sorts of beginnings really make us appreciate the small upgrades when we do get them. I am still ecstatic about the dSLR I eventually acquired (the cheapest canon model, 2 years ago) with its kit lens.

  76. Well there of course is always something I don’t have that I would like but I do try to make do with what I have. I have a couple of really nice lenses that I probably treat better than my own children 🙂 I agree though equipment does not make a photographer. You must learn lesson and try new things, that is what I have loved about doing a 365 project this year. I have learned so much and tried so many new things.

You know, I am just so thrilled to have a dslr that I am good with working with what I have until "money falls from the sky" 🙂 My relationship with gear is this, photography starts with the eyes, I used to take some pretty amazing shots with a point and shoot, so now that I have dslr the possibilities have opened up for even better shots! Yeah, I’d love to have a lensbaby and maybe an 85mm 1.4, blah, blah, blah…I got over my lens envy during my 35mm slr days. Right now, I’m content to even been considered when someone is looking to have their portrait taken! But hey, if anyone is giving away equipment or you see money falling my address is….. 😉

  81. There are days when I am unhappy with what I have and I spend hours online looking at the prices of cameras and lenses. And then I think about how lucky I am that I have what I do have. The camera and lens that I have is leaps and bounds greater than what I had last year and in a few years I’m sure I will have even greater upgrades. I don’t think you are limited by your equipment, you are limited by your creativity and imagination. And in terms of creativity and imagination, I have more than I know what to do with 🙂

  82. I have the Nikon D50. Normally use the lens that came with it. I have recently been thinking about an upgrade but I am in no financial position to do so. My gear is always with me and I am sure that family and friends see it as another part of me. Like a third arm or something.

    I am just moving beyond my trusty point-and-shoot, having received my first SLR at Christmas. My lens inventory consists of the lens kit. I received the 50mm f/1.8 for Mother’s Day. This equipment is all the challenge I need at the moment (ignorance is bliss, no?), but in all seriousness I do look forward to gaining comfortability and the possibility of more challenging equipment.

  84. I was lucky enough to receive my D90 as a gift. I love my camera. Because I don’t feel like I’ve come close to mastering it, I’m not looking to upgrade any time soon. I would love to add about 3 more lenses to the kit lens that I have. I don’t feel confined because I still have an endless amount of things to learn and pictures to take with the equipment I do have.

  85. Oh, you touch on such an interesting topic! A few years back, my husband encouraged me to buy a Canon 20D. I did and I love it. However, I most often grab my dinky Canon SD1000 point-and-shoot, especially when traveling with my family. No, it doesn’t have quite the range that the 20D has (blows out a little too often), but good pictures are about the photographer’s eye and mind, just like any artist.

    I was speaking with a friend who has been a professional architectural photographer for many years. I mentioned that my lenses weren’t so great, and he told me, "They don’t have to be." That’s all it took. He didn’t even have to spell it out. Great equipment does not necessarily a great photographer make. (Not that they wouldn’t be nice! 🙂 )

  86. I’ve been told over and over and over again, that cameras don’t take nice photos, people do. I remind myself of that over and over again when I get lens/camera envy. It is so true though, you can have an awesome camera but still not take awesome photos.

I shoot with a rebel xs – entry level, and on it at all times is the ‘cheap’ 50mm f1.8. but, im a big believer that its the person behind the camera and get annoyed when people say "wow, you must have a great camera!" i bet no one tells a painter that her paintbrushes must be awesome! my photos aren’t excellent, but im not DFL either. my dSLR has helped me to become better, learn more and i love seeing my shots progressively get better. i may not have the "best", but i have the best that i can afford and my camera is my baby :o)

  90. I was given the T1i for my birthday last August with the kit lens. At xmas, my parents gifted me an 85mm. SO LUCKY. And my neighbor, a photographer who is doing other things with his life right now, lets me borrow his 50 or 100 whenever I want.   91. First of all I want to thank my husband for teaching about camera gear. I don’t think that someone needs the ultimate gear to produce an awesome image. It is always a challenge to learn new things about photography and photography gear.

    My first lens I used was a Nikon 50mm . My husband never let me touch any other lens (even though he had really really goood ones). It was the cheapest and best lens to learn. I had no zoom, I was the zoom. It pushed me to be creative. My husband laways says, push your gear to the maximum. No need for fancy stuff!

    Now, that I have other equipment, I still love shooting with my 50mm, even though i have better equipment.

  92. Oh yes. and absolutely props to you! for years I shot with a minolta 101a the completely manual, workhorse of cameras. And a pile of hand me down lenses. It was a perfect way to learn, my student camera. I loved that thing, and it took a fair beating over the years.
    Now I’ve been *gifted* what I consider a rockstar camera. I longed for a new lens for years and was delighted and shocked when my husband went for the lens AND body. I was intimidated to even take it out of the box for days after it arrived. People see it and take me seriously. And it does take stunning pictures, sometimes, and when they’re something less than stunning, I have no one to blame but myself. I’m still learning this camera, nearly a year later. And I find a growing love for it too. When my 11 year old stepson wants to take over, I get a little twitchy and probably grab my camera back too soon. 😉
    I would LOVE a canvas! Been considering one. Hardest part will be picking which picture!

  93. I am truly grateful to have a DSLR in the first place. it was not in our budget and my latest lens (gift from husband) was not either. I will make my way using my 18-55 kit lens and 50mm 1.8 to create a hopefully worthy portfolio to begin turning this very expensive hobby into a part time profession.

    Then I’ll dream about the 5D. But not before then. 😉

    I own a Lumix point and shoot, and a film camera, a Nikkormat as old as my uncle.
    I love the digital because it’s all I got in that aspect, even if it’s barely manual.
    And I certainly ADORE my Nikkormat. She’s been with me for a long long time now. Maybe more than twenty years. I will never regret buying it from my sister. And I made a promise to never sell it!
    But… I’d love a digital reflex already.

I used an entry-level dslr throughout school and for the first couple years of my business, and while I have been blessed to be able to upgrade the body, I still use the 50/1.8 almost exclusively because it is the best lens I have. I remember someone telling me a long time ago that Ansel Adams would have been able to produce amazing photographs with a disposable point-and-shoot, because the gear does not make the artist, and that has stuck with me. Sometime in the next year I hope to be able to invest in another lens, and slowly build my collection as I can. My wishlist: a macro, a wide angle, and an 85mm prime.

  102. Oh I really relate to this post! I have two kit lenses and a $100 50 mm. My 18-55 mm kit lens doesn’t auto focus very well because I dropped it and had it fixed, but it’s never been the same. I dream and dream about getting a nice quality lens. Someday it will happen…

    I try to remind myself that my mid-level DSLR and kit lenses are still SO MUCH BETTER than anything I’ve ever had before and I am still able to make many great images. Still I can’t help wondering what I could do with more. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one. 🙂

  106. While I believe creativity mostly comes from the eye looking through the lens, I don’t believe that gear should be excluded in the creative process. I have a few good lenses that, if anything, inspire me to go out and shoot and improve my skills. There are so many things that can be accomplished through the open eye of a 35mm/f 1.8…but, sometimes, even better, I can extend my view with my 70-300mm and really look closely at an object or throw my view to the skies. In other words, equipment is an extension of our creativity and I too look forward to new "glass" someday…. 😉

  108. I can not begin to express my gratitude for this post.
    I shot with a Kodak P712 with a wide angle and a telephoto lens for several years. When I started hearing comments from other photographers in my area, both props and "when are you going to get a real camera", I became disenchanted with my gear. I have upgraded, not due to these comments, but because it was time, and I saved like a crazy person.
    I love my canon 50d with the wonderful lenses I have for them…that did not cost me upwards of $1200. Because, I too, have a mortgage, bills and kids to feed and clothe. But, as you stated, I’m not DFL either. I lvoe my images. My clients love my images, and that, in and of itself, speaks volumes.

    I’ve heard it said that anyone can pick up a camera, but not anyone can take my breath away. A good photographer and shoot a GREAT photo with ANYTHING. i am proof. You are proof. And we aren’t alone. 🙂

I do wish I had about solid week of free time to learn more about editing, that’s where I feel completely out of my realm. I appreciated what you had to say. I get compliments on my pictures, but sometimes I’m not sure if it was me or just luck. =)

If you can’t be with the one you love (in this case, a new cam + lens), LOVE the one your WITH! Learn your craft, people, and it won’t matter what kind of cam + lens you have!!

  114. I love my Canon Rebel & my kit lens & my 50mm with the bad review. I L.O.V.E. them. I was so fortunate that my camera was a gift, about one year ago. I’d still be using a crappy OLD PnS and dreaming of a DSL. I have so much to learn. Lighting, composition, processing. Certainly a more expensive body & glass wouldn’t make much of a difference for me right now. I love having my camera in my hand and I love taking photos with it, and I love seeing my progress. I like to think I am developing a better eye. Maybe this camera is all I’ll ever need. Maybe I’ll outgrow it, and have the means to move up. But for now? For now I love shooting with it, I love making pictures.

  115. I spent several years with the xti & the nifty 50. I shot most of my Project 365 with this combination and when I want a reliable, portable solution I often turn to this combo. My next purchase was the 24-70 mm 2.8L. When I first got it it was so heavy I took terrible pictures with it and so I clung to the 50 because I could reliably get good shots. Eventually I bit the bullet and refused to use anything but the 24-70 until I could master it. I am still in that process. Surprisingly enough, graduating to the 5D mii helped balance out the weight of the lens and I am happy now with that combination. Still have a new 100mm 2.0 to break in and lusting after the 70-200 mm 2.8 (I plan on renting it a couple times this year to test drive it — renting is such a good option for lens that you don’t have the bank or consistent need for).

  116. When I went on my first professional shoot, my client was an artist herself. She had her camera out, taking pictures of her paintings, as she arrived earlier than our shoot was set to start. As soon as I saw her camera, I felt devastated inside. It was nicer and bigger than mine. SHE was paying ME. Why?!

    Why? Because I had something to offer her. I knew how to use what I had (have) and use it well. I still get nervous that my gear isn’t good enough, but I’m learning that I’ve got me…. and that is.

I think it’s something that all photographers think of, even if only subconsciously – we are always lusting or limiting by our equipment, right? I believe that artists actually work better within limits. If you have too many choices, you become overwhelmed within the paradox you find within. I’ve always found my best work when I’ve been hit with a harder budgest and forcest to use my creativity on projects, the similiar goes with not always having the latest lens or the best in editing. I adore my thrift store scores and they are the cheapest equipment by far at under $5 a pop! – everyone always asks about those photographs more than my high tech stuff – (not that I don’t love those toys too!)

  122. I am in the beginnings of putting my gear together. I am slowly learning how to photograph. I have a Rebel XT with the lens it came with and recently bought the 50 mm/ 1.8 lens and a book. Slowly but surely I’m hoping to take better photos of at least my family and kids. I love all aspects of photography but since I’m in the medical field it’s take a lot of effort in my part to get the kids out to practice on them. I’m hoping once I’m better I will be able to buy better lens but that won’t be for a while.
