perfectly different

October 28, 2010 By Xanthe Berkeley

A stranger walking down Brick Lane, London, UK.

It’s not the “perfect” shot.

The focus is off and the tilt may upset certain people… it’s “shot from the hip” – a technique I learnt from many years of having a lomo in my pocket.

But I still like it… this is London… the textures are London: the brick and yellow lines everywhere. London is full of quirky people who catch your eye, just look at her shoes, outfit and hat – perfectly different.

As we’ve been celebrating imperfection this month, have you any shots that don’t tick all the boxes technically or shot in a way that goes against tradition, but still creates a feeling or conveys a message. I’d love to see your world of imperfection.

It may not be perfect — I tried to get my son to look at me — but I love the colors and the subject.

With a two-week-old baby, the fuzziness of the missed focus in my self-portrait attempt really speaks of my life at the minute.

I love your shot, Xanthe, and for the memory I have of the time I was living in london, it is so very london!!!
thank you for this post, it has been so great celebrating imperfection this month!
here's one of my imperfect shot, which I like in its imperfections: maybe too much light, maybe I should have cropped the not so perfect petals out, but I like the funny side of it, the flower which seems to be pulling the spider's web and inclining its head with this purpose, and I like all the light that I have captured, now that it is autumn I look for the light even more intensely!

I love your shot – it really does epitomise London!

Here are two imperfect portraits from me – both taken on the most basic point and shoot camera, and horribly grainy. They were both taken in sub-zero temperatures, at a camp on the Arctic Ice Cap – and I think both of them convey really pretty clearly that the subjects were cold cold cold! They bring back great memories for me.

This shot was taken by my husband out his airplane window. I had to do a lot of editing because of the quality of the shot and it's still not perfect but I love it because he took it.

I wish my shoot from the hip shots looked as good as yours. It puts me in mind of an old album cover.

My imperfection for today … not quite sharp enough for me, but still worth seeing.

A couple of years ago I did a collage of hipshots myself. They're slightly out of focus and crooked as well, but they sum up so wonderfully what it is like to walk the streets of Oslo in summer.

I don't know why this shot appeals to me – really it's not a great shot by any standards. I was playing with zooming the lens as I took the picture so I slowed down the shutter speed to get the blur. Turns out I went waaaay too far and the shot is so blown out it's barely recognizable was it's supposed to be: my husband, carrying my daughter with my son walking alongside on the left. But I still love it, I guess because it's so different than what I normally do with my camera: http://www.flickr.com/photos/anngeedee/4785042111/in/set-72157623122903804/

There is certainly a lot of imperfections in any photo I take 🙂

But this one, with the obvious blur in unintended places, remains a favorite picture all the same. My sweet 3 year old, her pose, the anticipation of what she might do next, and the sort of dreamlike quality about the whole thing.

All night, I was worried about the cars. So was my littlest. "Hold me so the cars don't get me," he kept saying. As it got darker shooting them was becoming difficult. This one was taken quickly because a car was probably coming & the youngest were on the run for more candy. I like the hurriedness of it.

Your shot is quintessential London to me, Xanthe.

I took this one the other day. The exposure was all wrong, the "two hour parking" sign was ill-placed, but I loved the arrangement of dark vintage truck against the white wall. I captured it quickly as another (not so photogenic) car was backing into the space in front of the truck.

I shot this through the passenger window of a car zooming down the interstate at about 60 MPH in a torrential downpour (the last nor'easter that hit Philadelphia in early spring this year). It's out of focus and has slight motion blur, and the rain streaming down the window made even more blur. I couldn't compose the shot well at that speed, and I was shooting with a point-and-shoot because my DSLR was in the shop. It's different from almost everything else I've ever shot, because it's gloomy and dark. But it's one of my favorites.
