right at home

January 2, 2012 By sarah-ji

I am not sure what it is that transforms a place from being just another space to somewhere that feels like home. Maybe it’s when you know it is safe to hang up your armor of defenses at the door. Or when you realize that you leave little bits of your heart behind whenever you spend time there. Or perhaps it’s when you see your child plop down on a futon with a familiarity as if she has spent countless hours hanging out on that piece of furniture.

I love this photo of my daughter making herself right at home in my friends’ apartment. To me, it is actually a perfect depiction of how I feel about that space, the affection and love I hold for that locale and for the friends who live there. It is a reminder that I photograph the spaces I inhabit because the photos become repositories of the memories knit together by love and friendship and laughter and conversation in that very place.

Please share with us your images of the places where you can hang your heart, the places that make you feel right at home, whether you actually live there or not.

This 'home' is quite simply my backyard….and definitely a space where we all find comfort:

I love it, especially in summer, when waking up and sunlight is shining on to one of the walls in warm light.
I feel still and already 'home' even before I moved more than an eyelid:

This place is my favorite at home. For reading, relaxing or playing with the kids – just perfect:

Home is where my partner is, since *he* makes me feel right at home, anywhere. But since he doesn't like to have his picture taken – here's an image from my physical home, Oslo: coming home from my travels, this city always makes me relax and draw a deep breath, because this is where the sights and the sounds and the smells and the temperatures are just *right*:

Here is where I start my day with coffee and morning pages. When I'm curled up in this spot, I really feel I'm home…

Every solstice, flickr has a project called a Day in the Life, where photographers record and comment on their days. I have participated almost two dozen times, and most times begin with a photograph of my kitchen table. For the past 40 someodd years, my kitchen table has been the real center of my home. I not only eat there, but I also read, watch birds and other wildlife, talk on the phone, and enjoy the ever changing view.

It is so interesting how the first handful of times we enter into another's space we are carefully stepping around. Not wanting to disrupt their flow of life. But some people have a way of inviting us into their space and offering it up to us as if it were our own. Not every where is like that, but when we find that magic is there. Deep love is opened up and we are safe. What a beautiful thing.

I'm a big history geek — history at large but also personal history. Being at home always holds a sense of the past overlapping with the present for me.

A couple of days a week i hang out with my friend G. I bring him food, he serves me coffee and we talk. Today we became totally engrossed in our smartphone apps and played around with them.
This photo perfectly captures the way we feel at home with each other
I love the warm color and horizontal stripes of the rug but G's socks definitely 'make' the shot for me lol!

In bed, underneath the window with a good book. That's definitely home for me:

Home to me is anywhere I'm surrounded by trees such as the view looking up from my backyard while in my hammock
