Despite my plans to execute our annual birthday cake baking ritual in the light of day (for optimum photos of course), some years it’s more difficult than others to find the time. This year, I knew that baking at night (past our bedtime even) wouldn’t offer a picture-perfect scenario. Luckily, I have long abandoned my expectation for perfect so I figured I’d give it a shot (or two) and tell this year’s story as it really is. We’re busy. And my daughter is growing up. And although life sometimes gets sticky, it’s always sweet.

This shot will stand as an all-time favorite of mine. I should have remembered that when I surrender and give it my best attempt to cook up something wonderful something yummy happens.

  2. What a lovely post this is. Your daughter is just beautiful.

    Sometimes we can plan things in our minds and image beautiful images that we will take with our lens but then our plans fall through and we think all our image planning is wasted. Often times though, we take photos anyway even if the light isn’t perfect or our mood is tainted and often times the images turn out even better than we ever dreamed.

    This capture was a complete surprise to us both. We were tired and had been sitting on the pavement waiting in line for a concert to start. The sun was setting and the crowd was getting restless, but you would never know it looking at us 🙂

  3. proving yet again to just keep shooting and capturing and doing what you love with those that you adore.

    this photo was one in a set that I was taking for my 365. I had an image in mind and was trying and trying to get it with my timer/remote. I was getting so frustrated at not being able to get what I wanted onto the frame.
    Finally, my husband came out and gave me a little help- he captured this shot and I adore it….

  5. Yes, it has happened plenty of times, especially when you are taking event photos. I always get a bit nervous before an event, because things can get a little bit unpredictable even with all the planning. But surprisingly I always come away with a few great shots, and I stick them right in my portfolio for the world to see.

  9. I find a lot of my pictures of my children are not "perfect" but they do capture the moments and I am a scrapbooker so I also tell the story. And yes, some of these not "perfect" shots have turn out to be some of my favorite because of the content not the composition.

    I took this image last December. I was actually taking photos of my flowers while the kids were running around out front. It was in full sun, middle of the day. I snapped a few of the kids and went back to my flowers. When I found this photo it made me laugh out loud! It’s one of my favorites! Pure joy, fun, and happiness! Just what childhood is supposed to be about! I’m so glad I turned my camera on them at that moment! 🙂
