Shutter Sisters

I mean, let’s be frank. These days cameras are so widely available that no matter where we go, there is always someone pointing and shooting nearby. As a photographer, this sometimes can feel a little overwhelming, as in: “Why should I even bother shooting when everyone is doing it, right??”

Well, thankfully, since I do believe that we all have a very unique point of view and a different reason to shoot, when I see other people, and especially other women, aiming and clicking, what comes up for me is a whole lot of curiosity actually. When I cross paths with a sister who is shooting, I’m always fascinated by her body language and how she seems engaged and transported. I feel so inspired by how she glows in the moment, that 99% of the time I end up shooting her in action. Women with cameras are just beautiful, don’t you think? You can bet I also turn my head  towards her subject matter to try to figure out what she is seeing and what I might be missing… Sometimes I just nod in agreement, “I see it too, sister.” But mostly, I just love knowing that we are all in this together: seeing, shooting, documeting beauty, telling the story of our lives. I really do.

  2. I love seeing people with cameras. It makes me happy to see that other's are trying to capture tiny bits of life, just like me. 🙂

  3. I'm curious too – what are they seeing that I'm not? What do they do with their photos once they've shot them? Scrapbook, leave them on the card, load them on their computer and leave them there, print them & sell them? The possibilities are endless!

  4. I've honestly thought, too, what's the point if it's all being photographed anyway? But I like the idea that we have our own points of view. I'm still looking for my unique p.o.v.

I love watching my sisters taking photos.We go out and shoot all over town and I love to sit and just watch them in action.The positions they get into,the passion they have when talking about what they shot. I enjoy and encourage my sisters in their shooting. I encourage lots of people I see shooting and tell them to keep at it!!! And when im the one shooting they encourage me too 😀

  14. This year I was stuck in traffic around the Tidal Basin in DC during the Cherry Blossom festival. I was grumpy and angry at all the people, vowing to never come down this way again. Then I noticed all the people with cameras. Taking pictures of their children, each other, trees, flowers, the water, the monument. For some reason seeing all those cameras cheered me up to the point that I decided next year I want to come down and take pictures of people taking pictures 🙂

  16. My dear friend Sarah. We spent one day together a few years ago in Newcastle. I was shooting some digital shots for work but Sarah's boyfriend lent me his precious Voigtlander, Sarah had her newer Pentax. We had such fun. It was probably the first time I'd shot film in over a decade and it seemed so much more fun than my DSLR. I was hooked. When I saw the results of the film compared to the digital I was even more convinced. These days I'm almost entirely shooting in film.

    Sarah's in London now. I miss her.

  21. It makes me totally happy to see other people shooting- makes me feel less shy to pull out my own camera and do the same thing.
