so, how’s the weather?

Inevitably the conversation turns to weather.

Texas summers are the equivalent to New England winters. In that way, you know, where it’s on everyone’s mind and somedays you fear you’ll never get through it. Summer in Texas feels like a cruel joke compared to the childhood of my youth. Weather has a power over me…  it’s the heat that does it. Sometimes I barely get along with it. (forgive me this)

And so I lose myself in the loveliness of the summertime goodies I find here. Truth be told, I find myself living vicariously through your images! (while sipping ice cold water of course, in the mandatory air conditioning as the temperatures outside my window climb towards 100 degrees)

Riddle me this: with the flurry of activity and sunshine and long family days, do you find yourself shooting more or less in the summertime? And do tell: how’s the weather where you live? Today, share with me an image I can feel.

  2. Over here in Ireland, our summer is probably best described as "changeable". Mostly mild and sometimes grey and rainy -never sweltering, we grab our sunshine the moment it comes out and savour it because we never know when it will return.

    My half-Spanish family and I usually spend our summers in Spain –we pack our suitcases with light summery garments and we go get our fix of guaranteed sunshine in the land of paella and siestas. This year, however, a series of unfortunate events have forced us to embrace a “staycation” in Ireland. Wish us luck!

    Oh and to answer your question, Meredith, yes I think perhaps I do shoot more in summertime.

  9. Oh my I love photographing the weather! It is probably my most favorite thing to photograph. I can’t stand a dull sky. Here is a photo of the weather a week ago:

    Its sunny and beautiful here now, but I still prefer the turmoil of an angry sky. Oh, and that storm was the one that produced a tornado in Vermont and two people were struck and injured by lightning!

  10. melbourne australia. it’s winter here. cold, although nowhere near as cold as parts of europe or america. some days a biting wind comes off the antarctic. some days it’s crisp and clear. other days it’s rainy an miserable. many days it’s all of the above. we have a saying for melbourne weather: four seasons in one day. there’s even a song about it

    but with the cold comes comfort. hot chocolate. a fire. an outdoor heater while we try to keep our al fresco lifestyle.

  15. It’s autumn here. Really autumn.
    Trees are <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/juliealvarez/4644895904/">dripping water</a> in the mornings, the air is full of moist, the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/juliealvarez/4688202208/">sun is always low</a> and the yellow trees are almost bare now.
    Every now and then, we get the chance to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/juliealvarez/4681090412/">go to the beach</a> for a little while, when there is sunshine, like I remember <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/juliealvarez/4701531816/">there was</a> last year <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/juliealvarez/4700897293/">in july too</a>.

  18. Here in HOTlanta, its HOTTTTTTT! Stifling stagnant heat. But the evenings are nice.

  20. Funny you should ask. It’s been flooding down here in Texas, as you must know, flooding in my neighborhood, and with a computer down – the one I use for my photography – I tried to blog this without a picture. And actually, it was okay, but I finally cheated and borrowed, with his permission, images from my neighbor/landlord, who is a photographer, and tucked them into the end of the post. A picture really IS worth a thousand words.

  24. It’s Summer here in Southern California! Come to think of it, it really isn’t all that different from Fall, Winter or Spring. The big difference right now is what they call June-Gloom. The days start off with a pretty thick marine layer that usually burns off by about 11 am each day. The sun comes out and the 60 degree cloudy morning is replaced by 72 and sunny.

  25. OMG the weather here is as bad as where you live. 110 with the head index today. I wanna trim hedges I wanna plant I wanna play outside its just to hot and we miss a lot of summer in Ga by stayin in the AC too.   26. I’m in Northern California where the summer weather is very dry and varies up to 30 degrees or more in a day (85 during the day, 55 at night). The up side is the weather is perfect for agriculture and this time of year is brimming with fresh fruits and vegetables. I’d do a lot more baking if I didn’t have to turn the oven on!

  27. In North Central Texas its hot. But if I get out before 8 a.m. the air is wonderful. I like to do much of my photography in the springtime and autumn. Bugs are best for photographing in the summer.

  30. I shoot way more in the summer. I am a hothouse flower by nature, yet live in Canada, so I get out as much as I possibly can while the weather’s warm. It doesn’t hurt that my kids stay up later and I’ve got so much more light to work with now that the days are so much longer either.

    The weather here’s been variable – a mix of sun and rain and moderate temperatures. We had a brief heatwave, followed by a week of wearing sweaters and long pants, but neither lasted long.

    This weekend I was thrilled to discover a field of poppies near my house – I live in a new development and the developers must have seeded these in the spring as part of the landscaping. I took a ton of pics but this is the only one I’ve got up so far:

  34. Here in Seattle we’re still waiting for summer! It’s decided to take its sweet time arriving and we’re just getting gray and rain…I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but summers in Seattle are normally gorgeous! When it is nice out, though, I am definitely out and about with my camera. Even if its just the plants in the backyard or my dog chewing his bone on the grass…

  37. oh meredith, your photo fills me with sunshine, and can’t imagine such heat at the moment. we are experiencing a cocktail of rain, wind and a little sun, i’m asking for june to resume it’s usual behaviour… please.

    the longer evenings usually mean playing in the magic hour before sunset, and sitting in the park and capturing beauty.

Reading these comments I have to say that I don’t think I would be happy living in Texas!…The weather in New England is so much more predictable even if the old saying goes.."If you don’t like the weather in New England…wait a minute!"….There has been lots of rain in RI this month of June …which the flowers loved even if I didn’t…

  44. Here in Edmonton Alberta Canada! we hold tight to our short glimpse of Summer. With a mere 4ish months of the warmth -just as soon as that first break of winter hits, (-10 C) you will see people in shorts, t-shirts, frolicking in something other than parkas. Its crazy actually that people can sustain the changes like this. -30 one month and +30 the next. crazy.

    I love the heat. I can’t get enough. +30, humidity, dry no wind – bring it! I love it all.
    I actually tend to take less photos in the summer months, due to enjoying the activity myself. holding a camera is not conducive to running through the sprinklers, or hiking up a mountain. I just want to enjoy summer, not document it.
