some wonderful alignment of events

September 25, 2011 By Irene Nam

“I often think of that rare fulfilling joy, when I am in the presence of some wonderful alignment of events. Where the light, the colour, the shapes and the balance all interlock so beautifully that I feel truly overwhelmed by the wonder of it.” – Charlie Waite

It may not be your best shot, nor a technically perfect one. But you knew when you saw it. The wonderful alignment of events.

Today share it with us.

. . . . . . .

We are giving away one $100 Paper Coterie gift card EVERY SINGLE DAY of September to one of YOU! All you have to do is share a comment each day before midnight EST for your chance to win that day’s random drawing. And be sure to keep shooting your own stories and adding them to the OWP Pool on Flickr where you have a second chance at winning one of those $100 Paper Coterie giveaways.

Having recently started to shoot Impossible Project film, that wonderful alignment is exactly what I need, each and every time! Here, sufficient light shielding, ambient temperature, focus and exposure settings came together to create one of my favourite-ever images: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jennifee/6132093235/

It was like a gift, happening across this meadow of seed pods. *loves*

This is a recent favorite of mine. I feel like I lucked out that Dad was holding his hand. Otherwise, it just wouldn't have been the same.

For me, recently in Italy on a trip, and saw a window which I thought was a perfect scene. I took many door and window pictures while I was there, and this was my absolute favorite. The stars were "aligned that day", the perfect window, in the perfect place. Ready to go back.

That's exactly how I felt about these adorable little sunflowers someone had placed in the hollow of a tree stump.

I was sitting for my friends' twins last weekend. Those of you that know children know that they have their own mind.

So, I didn't even try to get them to sit together or even still during my visit. But, I kept shooting anyway. And there, at the end of the night, after dinner and bath, a perfect shot, capturing the beauty of both of them, and the beauty of our time together.

This is an old pic, the composition for some reason I've always been fond of. It depicts late afternoon heat in summer and I like that. It's not at all a popular pic on Flickr or anywhere really and is probably not even a great photo, but I've always liked it. Funny how photography works that way!

It was such a brief moment, caught through the trees. I tried to walk around to get a clear shot without power lines, but I realized it didn't matter. The window would be open for just a little while and I could capture it. It makes me smile everytime.

I was at the West Indian Parade in New York and got a shot of one of the performers at the moment that she passed between two shoulders. It's one of my favorite shots from the entire trip.

I was aiming to the leaves in focus and send her into blur, but I got the focus wrong, and I knew the moment I saw the swish of the skirt that it was going to be perfect: http://www.flickr.com/photos/superdewa/6181382072/

This photo reminds me of when I was young in college and went to the beach in Santa Monica. At that time the book of the day was the Ninth Wave. I did not surf. I did count the waves. 1956 was a time of worry about the world and ourselves and did we have a future at all. This photo touched me.

Flying makes me nervous (mostly the turbulence). I was flying into JFK and the clouds were just beautiful. As we sunk into them, the plane rolled and rumbled a bit, but I just stared at my photo and felt at peace.

Walking to lunch with a friend and suddenly our toddlers grabbed hands. On the city street, I couldn't stop to compose. In fact, I was practically running to keep up. But somehow I caught an expression or two that I'll always treasure.

I try to be aware of when the alignment is more about the people involved and the memories created than the shots themselves. But when the shots are nice too, that's an added bonus:
