By now many of you have seen the gorgeous book by Stephanie Congden Barnes and Maria Vettese called A Year of Mornings: 3,191 Miles Apart. It is gorgeous… and I haven’t looked at mornings the same since opening it. Imagine that, a book that can alter the way you look at your life, every day. That is magic, and the power of great art.
Their collaboration began as a blog, each posting a photo from their morning, one in Portland, Oregon the other in Portland, Maine. The results are a collection of extraordinary diptychs, capturing a delicate, graceful and ordinary/extraordinary beauty.
In honor of this book, and to mornings, I offer a new challenge today.

Since most of my photos are of ‘early mornings’…it’s hard to pick just one. Here’s an early morning flower peeking thru a stockade fence:

I’m not a morning person. I cling onto the night through to midday if I can – but a toddler makes that impossible! My little boy woke me up at 4am earlier this week, and I was surprisingly happy to be up that early, but only because of what I got to see:

i have been feeling a little bit stuck creatively, so thank you for the inspiration to shoot during hours that are outside of my normal time frame. usually i just pick a new space to shoot in, but a new time is a wonderful idea!

I am a morning person and I love the quiet of the morning, especially right before the sun comes out. When it does, the light is amazing.

I have two dogs who insist that I’m a morning person, happily playing and walking and jumping all over me between the hours of 5:00 a.m and 5:30 am, okay not hours but half-hour. It does allow me to capture the early morning light, which is simply divine.

3191 – A year of mornings and A year of evenings – is probably the main reason I started a photography blog to encourage myself to take more pictures of everyday life. It has also led me to discover so many other beautiful photoblogs….Yet I still don’t take enough morning pics myself!…here are two I like…

I agree that mornings can be magical when you have a camera in hand and the motivation to get out of bed early. Recently, I was having a bout of insomnia. So instead of just lying there awake I decided to get out of bed, grab my camera gear and ventured in Joshua Tree National Park around 5 in the morning. The picture enclosed was one I took just as the sun was coming over the mountains.
