switching it up

November 13, 2010 By Paige Balcer

Every year, like many photographers, my fall schedule fills up with family sessions. It’s always fun to meet new families and visit with past clients. For the parents, the main goal is usually to get the holiday card photo and I’m happy to be able to provide that classic family portrait because I love them too! But sometimes I need to remind myself to keep the creativity flowing or I’ll find myself in a rut.

I enjoy my job and it’s important for me to continue to have fun with it. So I find it necessary to give myself permission to find those different angles and interesting perspectives. It’s okay if the family isn’t always looking at the camera or smiling. And it’s okay to play with images that are more expressive and less posed.

Today, show us your most recent expressive photo, whatever that means in your world.

I prefer to not have everyone looking at me. You know what I am talking about? That little kid in the class picture that is making a scary face or picking his nose. I love that.

They're always the images that are less than expected…like a barn falling out of the frame:

I also like it when people aren't looking directly at the camera. And using a totally different perspective adds a bit more drama:

I loved how this family session on the beach turned out. They were so full of love, and the sky was dramatic and gorgeous.

This one of Mama and little guy kills me because it's so honest:

And this one is great because the teenaged son isn't playing the game, which cracks me up:

This is a silly photo but my daughter's trainer is in the background and she is very camera shy so I'll take what I can get.

The autumn colours of your photograph are perfect. I believe that It shows the personality of the family much better than some set-up shot with a white background!

My image "Free Range" is expressive to me because this chicken comes from a battery farm. Now it's free to feel the mud between its toes.

Since I'm usually shoot fashion//product I enjoy capturing a nice portrait once in a while. Like this one I got of a friend of mine modeling one of my knit designs. It doesn't show the design well, but it shows *her* really well!

Sometimes you don't need to see the subject's face to register their expression. In this case, enthusiasm for piling rocks on a warm autumn day…

i am a photographer and i find myself loaded down with family portraits during this time of year as well. i love doing them, but many times the families are just looking for basic, everyone smile at the camera type photos. so i try to play with the angles, but i really unleash my creativity on my everyday photos and self-portraits to keep from getting in the " everyone say cheese" rut. it's nice to know i'm not the only one!

Sometimes, just visiting a place a few times enables you to see and express it in different and creative ways, moving beyond the obvious::

Great idea…with such brevity they come and go, both Autumn and Infancy, different with each new day, seasons within seasons. So sweet.
These aren't my most recently taken, but most recently added to my blog…just getting started. ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope you'll enjoy them nevertheless!

I always try to mix things up and take family photos in ways that best reflect the family. Here are some from a recent photo session on a gorgeous fall day:

I love photographing faces, but sometimes it's the details that make me happiest. In this set, I think the photo of the feet in the fall leaves is my fave. ๐Ÿ™‚
