the heart of a collector

February 15, 2011 By Meredith Winn

Do you find yourself photographing a favorite spot in your home? {I’ve learned this space is like comfort food and it’s best just to go with it and not question the why of it.} Today I’m curious as to if you, too, are drawn to photographing collections. I love seeing a person’s favorites treasures out on display. Whether they belong to me or not I enjoy photographing these sacred spaces. When on display, they become more than just paintbrushes, buttons, or beatrix potter. This is the stuff that makes a house a home. Share with us today a bit of your most favorite things to photograph and let it tell a story of its own.

What a pretty shelf! I love the rich color of the wall and the Valentine decoration. This is a topic near and dear to my heart. I know I'll be returning to this blog post again and again to see others collections.

I have several collections and yes, I find myself drawn to them for use in my photos. Lately I've been thinking about photographing my button collection but haven't quite got the image I want. Here are a couple of my collections:

Old cameras. This one belonged to my Dad and shot many photos of me and my family when we were young:

Small clocks, some of these belonged to Dad's mom and others I picked up in antique stores:

Perfume bottles. The Chanel #5 bottle belonged to my Mom's mother and the others belonged to my mom.

Lastly, here is a shot of my Dad's mom attic as it looked last August. She's been gone many years, but when I go upstairs to this dusty, dark place I feel close to her. Many, many happy memories here.

I look forward to returning and looking at everyone's collections. I love to hear the stories behind them.

I haven't done a lot of photographing inside the house because I have never been pleased with the lighting or lack there of. Recently, I discovered a sweet spot where the sun never shines but is instead surrounded by windows. I place my subjects on the wood floor where they pick up the light and reflection.

i have a lot of collections in my home – bits and baubles collected from nature, birds, bunnys, hearts, German Nutcrackers, etc. One way I like to photograph my collections is to take photos around the house and then put them together in a collage. Here is an old one my bird collection.

Books books books. I have a lot of them on display and piled up in a corner because I've run out of room on my bookshelf. But regardless of my love for books, the most important things on my bookshelf aren't books.

love love love this photo, merideth!

i do like to take pics of things in my own home… little nooks with charming treasures. but i find it is in my sister's vintage flat in the city that i love to photograph the most! every single room you enter has so much that the camera would love… that i love!

here is one of my most recent… in her den. she has a sweet little vintage-esque model plane hanging from her ceiling fan pull chain. it looked so neat in front of the very old photo canvas wall hanging she has in there.

I love this photo. The color is rich and dreamy. Makes me excited to get to snappin' some interior collections. Today it was all about the back yard self portrait meets silhouette in the back yard.

There's a small collection of stuff here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/18572605@N02/4168953663/

This had made me realize there are things and parts of my home that should be photographed, but haven't been…

I suppose you could argue these are part of a collection of photographs located throughout my home: http://www.flickr.com/photos/18572605@N02/4166625939/
