While looking through my photos I see a pattern: I’m either zooming way in for the smallest hint of detail or pulling way back to gather in the view. 

I’ve mentioned negative space here before, and how I love the freedom of it. White space lets your mind wander. So, how does empty space in portraits help tell a story? There is emotion in the distance of it. The tinyness of them out in the big world. The hint of hands being held. The farawayness of conversations shared.

  7. I was at Umlauf Sculpture Garden last week and was taking close-up pictures of a lot of the sculptures; this particularly one of a couple kissing, well, I felt they needed some space:

    I like the concept of "negative" space and will work on that for sure!

  10. There are so many trees surrounding me that I get frustrated by the lack of negative space. I need to change my point of view and search out the negative space.

  11. I'm usually all up in my kids' faces with my camera. I've been trying to pull out more and get the "big picture" but it's tough.   16. I love negative space, particularly when it's blue sky, your photo is really stunning. I think it's about perspective for me also, little people in a huge world.
