I can’t help it. The last week of the year I have to thumb through my journals, dig into my archives and look at all the photos that I took the past 12 months. What I love most about doing this is that it helps me acknowledge that I’m nowhere near where I thought I would be a year ago, and that it’s okay. This makes me profoundly grateful for every experience that enabled me to learn and grow, for the people in my life, and mostly, for the memories that I now get to cherish and look back on fondly. The photo above was taken during a family trip in Switzerland. And this is my best memory of the year 2011.
Today show us yours.
In late September, my husband and I visited Toronto. The photo below was taken at the Art Gallery. The Frank Gehry-designed spiral staircase was stunning. That weekend trip, including seeing the Cirque du Soleil show "Totem", comprise my favorite memory of the year. And my favorite photo of 2011.

My husband and I were reminiscing the other day about our best 2011 memories. Our annual trip to the lake was a clear winner for both of us. That place is magic and we can't wait to make more memories this summer again.

Oh, thank you for this! It's been (and still is) a bit of a rough year, and I needed the push to go back to my archives to see that I do have some very happy memories from 2011, such as a relaxed summer holiday in Ireland with my partner, or my 30th birthday celebration:

I am having a difficult just selecting one memory right now but there is a theme to my favorites. The times we spent together as a family. It is not as easy to get everyone together these days. We live so far from one another. So I really cherish the family time.

I just made a collage this morning as I'm cleaning out my archives for 2011 & making room for new memories of 2012. I took several picks throughout this past year of where my feet have trod…..

my best memory is my trip to London, to be with my younger sister: http://www.anasofiaeugenio.com/2011/09/street-photography-london.html 🙂 we had rainy days but that didn't stop us from being outside all the time. she registered me in a three hours photography workshop and we both had fun with my camera. I miss her dearly. she doesn't come home for Christmas (I live in Portugal where all relatives are) since 2008.
My best memory is time spent in the mountains:

My best memory is of the visit of our two grown sons (one lives in New York and one in western Oregon) visiting "home" for the first time together in more than two years. The younger one's fiancee' also came along. I have several images of them while they were here, but the one of them leaving is probably my favorite.

Any time I get to hang with my mom – especially when we're traveling – is awesome. She and I were in far flung places three times together this year. This is my favorite photo of her from those trips: http://flic.kr/p/9jmTZE. I blogged all about the year and have other pictures of her (as well as lots of other things) here: http://iwannabemewhenigrowup.blogspot.com/2011/12/reflections-on-2011.html
a trip to Acadia National Park with just my little family.

Even though I love traveling and have been to some cool places this year (London, Heidelberg, NYC, Quebec City amongst others) my favorite memory is that of cycling along our local rail-trails with my husband. You see, we are both overweight and not too fit, and we live in a part of the country where we have to use the car to pretty much get anywhere. It changed our summer and fall when we decided to load the truck with our bikes and drive the 30 minutes to the beautiful bike trails in our area. This was a special treat for me because I loved growing up in a big European city where I used to cycle everywhere, and it was made the more special for doing this with my American husband who normally loves to drive everywhere. This shot shows a favorite view along the trail.

It's difficult to choose just one photo and just one memory there are lots from htis year to choose from, holidays in France, days at the beach close to where we live, walks in the woods, but I have to say that the wedding of our daughter comes top. It was a beautiful day and I will never forget how amazing and happy she looked.

This is an easy memory for me, however I didn't take any photographs because I wasn't allowed a Camera in the building. I took a special little girl (18 months at the time) to Blue Planet (Like SeaLife).
To see her reactions was priceless especially walking through the shark tunnel, they will always stay with me. She has made my life better and me a better person so this year I am most greatful for her.
These are just a few other fantastic memories I got to make with her.

This year was full of travel and new explorations, but some of the fondest memories were the result of a return to a known and loved place. Photos from Harvard Square:
