sweet mystery

June 24, 2008 By Tracey Clark

062408_600.jpg

I’ve noticed that I can no longer look at the world around me without a photographer’s eye. So much so that I don’t realize I’m doing it until someone reminds me. Like when I comment about the way something simple looks so complex or the mundane looks somehow illuminated, I will often get either a blank stare – huh? or someone’s light bulb moment—wow! I would have never noticed that but now that you mention it…

For the most part when I turn my lens to the subject at hand I like to think that I am choosing or even controlling how I capture it; the point of focus, the compositional framing, the direction or intensity of the light. But the flipside and perhaps the balance is that I gladly and willingly rely on the help of the mystery of the medium itself. For me, this magic is what breaths life into my work, not me.

And sometimes even when I think I know what I am creating in a photograph, the subject, the light, the alchemy of all of it mixed together in some kind of creative stew brings tastes and smells that I could have never concocted on my own. Maybe that’s why I’m always hungry for more. It’s always one succulent visual feast after the next.

My favorite photographs are usually those that surprise me. The ones I didn’t see coming. When something extraordinary has developed from the ordinary. An image that draws me in and questions what it is I’m really seeing. Something refreshingly stimulating and curious.

What about you? Do you have images that have brought their own magic? Share with us the shots that challenge your senses and tickle your pallet with mystery and intrigue.

the good old summertime

June 22, 2008 By Tracey Clark

062208_600.jpg

With the summer comes lots of sun, water and sand. The combination doesn’t sound like the best one for photographers. However, the carefree days at the beach or even around the house can make for playful, fun photo moments. When it comes to capturing the best of the best summer moments, the key is photographic experimentation and not being afraid of getting your feet wet.

Shooting into the light is nothing new around here (just check out these shots from bee bee mod, monamegs and and kristybee) but what about when you add water to the mix? My girls were sprinkler hopping the other afternoon and I was having a blast with my camera jumping in and out of the water sprays, clicking pix of my girls as they frolicked in uninhibited summer glee. The sun and the water only added to the magic.

As we kick off the start of summer, share with us some of your wet and wild photo moments (without the topless stuff, ahem).

As we prepare to celebrate my youngest daughter’s 5th birthday in grand fashion (a bounce house and cupcakes with sprinkles) I have only one question-

Chocolate or vanilla?

If you have an image that begs a burning question, leave the link in the comments for all of us to ponder.

The big winner of the MamaFocus Photo Contest (a la our collaboration with Mamazine)  is this wonderful shot by Iyoyome. YAY!

There were so many stellar submissions, I urge you to take a peek at the pool and see for yourself. Good stuff.

I wish i had more arms…or wings… by kimthemidwife – first runner up

After the Migraine by Camera Shy Momma -second runner up

Sun Spinning by SouleMama– third runner up

Such great images ladies! Congratulations to you talented Shutter Mamas! It’s always nice to win fabu prizes for your efforts, don’tcha think?

And since we’re on the topic of mamas (albeit totally off the subject of photography), today the brilliant Brene Brown of Ordinary Courage begins an unprecidented series for parents based on her life’s work, “The Gifts of Imperfect Parenting-raising our children with courage, compassion and connection.” I had the pleasure of listening to the just released CD of the same name and I will tell you IT IS REMARKABLE! A must have for any parent–any person for that matter! Seriously. It’s life-changing stuff but it’s delivered in the most approachable, hopeful way. Don’t just take my word for it…check out Brene’s blog today as she begins her series. And get the CD.

Go. Now. Read. Be enlightened.

What’s Inside

June 4, 2008 By Tracey Clark

060408_600.jpg

Well my fellow photographer extraordinares…you asked for it, you got it. The Sisters and I have recorded all the photo equipment we use into one massive list. It’s chock full of links and everything!  The What’s in the Bag list is here to stay (see the new Equipment List option in the left sidebar) so don’t fret that you have to memorize it. Peruse at will and click around to see what’s in our bags and get detailed descriptions via the unprecedented retail resource site that many of us know and love B&H Photo.  If there’s a glitch here or there, do let us know…things might not be totally dialed in quite yet.

I plan on pooling up some of the favorites from all of you (the ones you so kindly listed in the comments the other day) and listing those as well. I’m pretty sure we’ll soon be adding something like a wish list too. What the heck, right? We can dream big if we want to. I know I am currently looking to upgrade my cute little Rebel soon so hopefully I’ll be adding something like this little number to my list-fingers crossed.

How about you? Have you got your sights on a little something special of the photo kind?

San Francisco Clicks

June 3, 2008 By Tracey Clark

060308_600.jpg

Picture this: a group of fabulous women walking the streets of a sterling city, sharing, laughing and basking in the glow of their sisterhood. No, I’m not talking about a scene from Sex and the City (although I have already seen it and LOVED every minute of it)-I am talking about Clicks in the City, and you’re invited to play a staring role. Heels optional. Cameras a must.

A few of us Sisters are going to be attending the ever-popular BlogHer Conference this summer where we will be hosting the first ever BlogHer PhotoWalk. It’s all very exciting. Personally, I’m giddy with the idea of getting outside, taking in a little of Union Square through my lens and clickin’ with a group of women passionate about photography (meaning all of you).

So, who’s in? You heading to San Francisco with us? Share your thoughts in the comments and if you are considering joining us please pop over to get the details at the PhotoWalk post at BlogHer and let the ladies of BlogHer know you’re coming. And there’s a button to grab while you’re there to help us spread the good Sister word. Let’s show the world what a photo force we are, shall we?

Look out San Francisco. Here we come.

Easy Answers

May 31, 2008 By Tracey Clark

053108_600%20copy.jpg

In yesterday’s comments Melody asked what so many people have asked before,

What lens do you love-use-can’t-live-without…?

A few of you asked the same thing of Kate and I for our radio show, I have gotten numerous emails of the same accord, and there have been a few threads about lenses in our Flickr discussions.

Of all the questions I can think of, the equipment is the easy one. It’s just a matter of pulling out all of the stuff from our bags and listing them for you, right?  So, where’s our list? I am working on it as we speak. It’s my little goal for the weekend; to have a bright and shiny page posted here listing what the contributing Sisters have tucked in their bags. Now that I’ve put it out there, you’ll hold me accountable, won’t you? In return, all I ask of you is to list some of the equipment you use (at least your most favorite stuff) and maybe we’ll list what’s in your bag too!

We’ll show you our list if you’ll show us yours.

Pictured above: a reflected self-portrait featuring my massive (and totally rockin’) Canon 24-70 mm 2.8. Ain’t she purty?

Open to Questions

May 30, 2008 By Tracey Clark

053008_600.jpg

My partnership with photography has been a come as you are and ask as you go sort of thing. Ever since I got my first SLR handed down to me from my step-father to use for my very first (and pretty much only) photo class, I have had the pleasure of magically and mystically finding my way around the medium with minimal prodding or probing.

It wasn’t until I got a job with a photographer that I began to ask questions. But I only asked what I needed to know; small, easy to digest bits of information to get me by as I felt more comfortable using an intuitive, experimental approach to learning. Of course, it took me a while to be able to count on any consistency in what I was doing (because I really didn’t know what I was doing) but that didn’t stop me. That is, until I began to realize my limitations. My inability to recreate what I had created began to frustrate me. And only then did I begin to dig deep.

Not a lot has changed today. There are days, I feel like I’ve got enough dialed in to keep me satiated. Yet there are times when I see something in someone else’s images that I covet…a simple clipping of the corners, a rich border in a texture, a tint or hue that stirs something within me…and I find myself thinking, how do you do that? When I feel limited, I know it’s time to start asking the questions to get me past the hurdles I’m up against.

What about you? Are there ways you feel limited in your photographic work? Do you have any burning questions that you feel might help you crack some kind of code to help you push through some barrier that stands before you? Let’s make a pact and ask those questions, shall we? The Flickr Pool Discussion thread has been a great source for asking and answering. I am so impressed with your willingness to ask and answer. Let’s keep that chatter going. Maybe we can even bring some of those conversations over here. What do you think?

There’s an Omaha Proverb that says, ask questions from the heart and you will be answered from the heart. I think that has a nice ring to it .

Looking Back

May 23, 2008 By Tracey Clark

052308_600.jpg

It’s that time of year again. If you read my last post, you know where I’m at; bobbing up and down in the tide of melancholy. It doesn’t take much these days to get me teary. Even a simple request to reminisce on family time at the sea shore got my sentimental wheels turning. When I noticed that the prompt was inspired by diapers, the motivation began to dwindle because my kids are out of the diaper phase. Uh oh. Here comes the rush swelling emotions. My children are long out of diapers. Dang it! Here I go again. My babies are growing up. I’m telling you, I’m hopeless.

When it comes to looking back on my life, the beach is the consistent strand that connects all the things I want to remember; family, fun, laughter, relaxation, nature, simplicity, peace, perspective, clarity. Our days (and evenings) spent at the beach are some of my fondest memories. I guess it would make sense logistically speaking as we live only a mile or two from the So Cal coast but even still, we are die hard beach people. Summer, winter, vacations, you name it, we head to the ocean—to dig in the sand, splash in the sea, snack on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, walk on the beach, discover treasures, and rediscover each other. And I always bring the camera.

What about you? Where are your most sacred memories found? Is there a place you visit and revisit where you find your soul at its most content? Is it a multitude of memories that make it special or one single instance when it was as if the planets aligned just for you? Where ever or whatever it may be, I’ll bet there’s a photo that helps encapsulate it, isn’t there?
