2010 is fast upon us. Time to put 2009 to bed and look out into the wide expanse of possibility the new year always brings. So far in my short career as a photographer, I’ve been on the look out for the shots that are tight and close, revealing a certain kind of tenderness or connection. This year, I intend to do the same, but maybe from a few steps back. I wonder what I’ll notice about the ways we long for one another with something (anything!) other than my trusty 50mm on my camera. I wonder what I’ll see up close this year with the point of view that the frame can say just as much a little bit more empty, a little bit more wide.
What would happen if you were on the look out for something slightly different for the coming new year? What would you see through that lens? What would you explore that’s brand new to you?
Show us “the classic” picture you always love to shoot–the vintage you 2009. Then share something new you’d like to do with that camera as we look out to 2010.

The vintage ‘me’ likes to capture details that are without people:

The new ‘me’ (I hope) is looking to capture more and more of human daily life:

The "vintage" me and the "new" me are similar in that I’ve always played the role of being a "fly on the wall" photographer. I go after the authentic moments, the in-between fragments of time when my subjects don’t think I’m watching or shooting. The "vintage" me took very few people shots:

The "new" me is honing in on connections, especially ones of people and their animals. Here is one example:

The vintage me captures still life’s — beauty around the house:

The 2010 me hopes to capture more moments that imply a story:

hmmm…I guess my classic photo is of nature and flora. I would love to do more portraits this year. People are interesting and challenging. It’s so difficult to capture someone’s "soul" and I love looking at portraits that do.

Beautiful photo!!
Classic me ’09 (well, at least for the 2nd half of the year) is stuck on 50mm/1.4

Although I don’t plan to abandon this look, I’d like to return to my roots and focus on the wider view as well.

Vintage Jaana likes taking pictures of "stuff" when she’s out an about.

In the new New Year, I hope to be less timid and take pictures of strangers who catch my eye. I’m fine when someone has hired me, but when people are minding their own business I don’t like to bother them. With a little bravery I think I’ll get some great shots!

Classic me always uses the image to start a story:

The 2010 me wants to merge my painting & photography:

However, I am all about telling stories, so we shall see how this works. In the best of all worlds, I will be able to do both.

Vintage me is everything before … new me … maybe more shooting on the fly a single shot instead of just one more.
There’s plenty of examples here of the former, but not too much of the shoot and go Elizabeth I might like to become.

2009 me was all about flora and fauna with a macro lens.

2010 me is about better portraits. Because, the trees around town are beautiful, but they don’t change nearly as much each year as my kids (and my parents)!

2009 was a tremendous year of learning for me. I learned that I am fascinated by the details (and oh! that 50mm f1.8 lens is addictive!):

In 2010, I want to broaden my horizons:

And I’m embarking on a 365, so that should be a good start! Thanks to Shutter Sisters for helping me along on my journey.
